I'm feeling so depressed again about this fibro...

I thought I had finally found a good Rheumy who was recommended to me by my friend who works for a Rheumy in MD. The "pill reps" that come in recommended this doctor when questioned by friend for a good Rheumy in Northern Virginia for her friend (me) who has Fibromyalgia. I've been 6 times and now have given up. Every time I wait a min. of 2 hours or more. 4 times *** 20 -35 minutes were because she took the time to talk to a "pill rep" or tens unit rep. (Why not when patients are not in the office.) We sit in pain, while she ask....what do I get out of this. Free samples? 3 mos of the tens unit free trial and than what will you offer as an incentive after that. "Oh you brought me lunch, how nice." Of course now I know why the reps love her. When you go in her office, I come prepared with how I have been doing on the pain scale, meds, etc... documented daily on paper. Easy and straight forward for her. She lays the paper down each time, never looking at it. She stands over me as to say "hurry up" waits for me to diag. myself and suggest the necessary meds for myself and out the door I go. I have honestly come to believe that it has everything to do with doctors who are inpatient, refuses to further his or her education to understand the needs of their patients. Earning the quick buck is what it has turned into, therefore we must be patient, educated and basically diagnoise ourselves. Unfortunately we do not get paid and "pay" one heck of a price to learn a "bit" of information. For two years I have bounced from doctor to doctor. I thought I finally had gotten somewhere with my most recent rheumy. My friend kept saying, she comes highly regarded, don't give up. Let's see, the last time I went she talked to the other doctor forever about her new kitchen (that folks, I can proudly sad is thanks to me. HA) Now I am starting over, doctor number 63. I had pretty much gotten over the depressed state and back there again. Sitting around not wanting to do anything gaining a few extra pounds and feeling sad all of the time. If anyone knows of any good doctors around the Northern VA are, please let me know. I have been to so many, i would love to find one that someone has had even "some luck" with.

Thanks in advance....gentle, sweet hugs everyone!

Re: I'm feeling so depressed again about this fibro...

I wish I had an answer for you. I understand how you feel though. I am in Western Colorado and I'm lucky that my PCP is a doctor who listens and furthers her education. Otherwise I would be out of luck. When I became disabled two years ago we didn't even have a rheumy. When we finally got one it was a huge waste of time. You might try finding a PCP who is knowledgable instead of a specialist. My PCP has been the most help of anyone I've ever seen. It stinks to be so sick during our National Healthcare Crisis. There seems to be a general "who gives a blank" out there.

Good luck to you.

Re: I'm feeling so depressed again about this fibro...

If nothing else your post made me feel fortunate that I have not seen as many doctors as you yet. I, like you, hate feeling like being herded through like a cattle drive with clock ticking until they see next heifer. Who would not be depressed on top of everything else? I worked at a clinic where drug reps were very influential as they were always handing out pens, advertising or supplying luncheons for everyone. It added chaos to everyone's day and definitely distracted from the clinic's original task of treating patients. It shows you what a joke receiving a wide variety of meds is. I stayed there only for one year as it was a total joke and moved up north where they do not participate in such foolishness. However, sadly area is small and limited on doctors so receiving adequate treatment is lacking so my medical records are becoming increasingly heavier as I continue to accumulate history of seeking a caring professional who will treat me with dignity we so deserve. However, I am determined to continue until I find some relief as my condition is now totally out of control due to lack of decent treatment. Do not give up. We can't let them win. Remember a specialist does not always mean better care. (TT)

I can't help you with the doctors but I do know what you mean. I have waited 3 months since my last appointment but don't know if it's even worth going. My doctor didn't refil my Bextra because they don't deal with Medco (which is a mail in prescription company). I didn't know that till they sent me an email stating that the prescription wasn't refilled because the doctor never responded. I called my doctor and that's what they told me. So...they are supposed to mail me a scrip and then I have to mail it into Medco. That should take three weeks. That means I will have been off my Bextra for a month. The muscle relaxers he gave me upset my stomach so I stopped taking them. I rely on my nallergy pills to put me to sleep at night.
It sure is depressing!
Hang in there.

Re: I'm feeling so depressed again about this fibro...

I agree about specialists to some extent as it seems based on a lot of fibro
patients experiences posted that a lot of specialists have actually put a lot of patients back to square one. For me personally I was sent by my PCP to a rheumatologist ( my PCP said this doc had experience in diagnosing fibro ) that did an extensive exam and confirmed a dx of fibro-however the rheumatologist referred me back to my PCP to actually manage the fibro-medications,etc. I almost believe now that a persons PCP is better to manage
their fibro because at least in a lot of cases the relationship is more established.I know a lot of people have found fibro friendly docs by checking out a website that lists physicians recommended by fibro patients-try a web
search. Although drug reps could provide a valuable service in keeping up
docs knowledge of new meds & indications..too often I definately see docs
prescribing habits influenced by what drug reps have been detailing them lately-which is really sad...

Re: I'm feeling so depressed again about this fibro...

Thanks so much for "supporting me" everyone. I did set up an appointment with a "Pain Management Doctor" today. I am just so tired of being tired and the terrible pain. I really hope he can help.
