How much Vicodin is too much!!!

Hi All
Why do I feel guilty if I take a Vicodin maybe 3 times (1 per day 500G) per WEEK!!! I am in so much pain and it takes the edge off a bit, not too much, but if my husband asks me if I took one and I say I did, he always says, "I hope you don't get addicted".
How much is too much.
Thanks Lyn in Michigan

Re: How much Vicodin is too much!!!

Lyn,
If your taking that much and not getting much relief, you need to do something different. They really have found that the pain we're experiencing is nerve pain. All those other pain killers are good for muscle pain but not nerve pain. Have your doc write you script for a nerve pain drug. Don't feel guilty. When your in pain it's terrible!

Hi Kbak
Thanks for your advice. Do you really think that "3" Vicodin per "week" is too much.
Thanks Lyn in Michigan

Kbak
Forgot to ask you a question. What kind of a prescription do you take for "nerve pain". I am having my nerves (facets) burned in a couple of weeks after having diagnostic "medial branch blocks" for chronic myofascial pain. Wish me luck!!!!
Thanks again

Re: How much Vicodin is too much!!!

hi lyn,
no it is not too much. 3 pills a week is beyond reasonable girlfriend. tell your hubby to close his mouth if he cannot be helpful. i take 2 a day almost every day and have for about 4 years. i do not fall over and die if i run out. addiction is also a mind set. you relax and stop worrying.
fms/cmp each involve a great deal of pain and the process of learning to live with it. that does not mean you live without relief and tuff it out. it means you use common sense and the knowledge of doctors to achieve the best level of pain management you can, given your pain tolerance level, your emotional strength, and the degree of fms/cmp you have. it differs for each person. there is no lump format we all must somehow fit into. so you take a deep breath, tell hubby to take a chill pill, giggle, and pat yourself on the back for only taking 3 a week. i applaud you!!
peace,
bluelakelady
for cmp i have chosen myofacial release massage. i also do fms deep tissue massage. i am curious, what exactly do you mean by having your nerves burned? are they going to kill them? myofacial pain travels. is it possible the pain will leave this area? or has it been going on for a good bit of time?

Re: How much Vicodin is too much!!!

Bluelakelady (what a cute name)

Thank you so much for your post on the Vicodin. I didn't think that was too much. Thanks for your support. Apparently they say that people that are as in as much pain as we are in cannot get addicted!!! Whether that is true or not, I don't know. I have like most people with CMP/FMS insomnia and take Ambien every night under the advice of two doctors at a sleep clinic. They didn't even do a sleep study on me they just asked me how the Ambien worked and I said (at the time) that it helped me to sleep so they told me that I could take it "indefinitely"!!! Well that was over 3 years ago. It doesn't help me sleep as much any more as it used to. I have tried other pain meds. and none of them help a lot but the vicadin helps better than any other. I actually was given "diloded" (sp)(morphine) by a facial specialist that I went to, to see if I had TMJ. My family doctor was horrified and it didn't take the pain away so I didn't take it!!!

As far as getting my nerves burnt - that is apparently what they are going to do. I have had this problem for about 5 years. I have chronic pain in my neck, shoulders and up the back of my head into my forehead, in my jaw, in front of my ears and even behind my eyes. I also have headaches that I have had for the 5 years now. I had surgery done on C5/6&7 Nov. of 2003 for bulging discs, bone spurs, arthritis and degeneration. I have pins, plates and donor bones. The pain never did go away. 6 weeks after surgery I had a whiplash car accident (not my fault) and didn't even get a chance to heal. I found out recently that my second donor bone did not fuse - the bone apparently disintegrated. Anyway the neurosurgeon told me that there was no sense in doing more surgery because he was afraid that it was fibromyalgia. My own family doc. and the pain management doc. think it is Chronic Myofascial Pain. The pain doc. tried 3 sets of epideral injections and it didn't help at all. Then he wanted to do more medial branch blocks which are diagnostic. The freezing comes out after about an hour but if the freezing takes away more than 50% of your pain then he said I was a good candidate for "radio frequency" burning of my nerves. What they did was inject lanocaine (I had it done twice within 2 weeks) into my facet joints at C3,4&5 where my bones now are degenerating further and immediately I felt about 60% better. He went in on the side of my neck while I was laying on my back. The second time I got it done it was another pain doc and I had to lay on my front and he injected the shots into the back of my neck. I didn't get as much relief this time maybe 40% but it was better than nothing. I now have an appt. to get my nerves burned. I will go back to the doctor that did the first ones as I got better results. They put the needles in exactly the same spot only this time the end of the needle is hot and it burns the nerves that send the pain signals to your brain. Yes it is only temporary and is masking the problem but he says it could help for 6 months up to a year. I will take it. I am nervous and of course just like the surgery it is not guaranteed to work but I am willing to try. Then I will start over and get the right side done. Sorry this post is way too long but how can you leave out half the story.
Thanks for your interest.
You take care of yourself and I will talk to you soon.

Re: How much Vicodin is too much!!!

bluelakelady

Thanks, I will let you know after I have the nerves burnt, - my appt. is around the 2nd week of may.
You take care of yourself. I have been reading some of your posts and I think you are a very special person. My mother had a heart attack and a stroke about 5 years ago and seemed to go down hill from there. She was a very healthy woman, she took very good care of herself, ate right, exercised. She had a lot going for her then she got sick. She was pretty stubborn and tried to fight it as hard as she could. We had to put her in a nursing home about 2 years ago. She didn't do much but lay around and hardly spoke at all which was heart breaking to our family and she used to be a real talker. There were times where my 2 sisters and I wish we could get a word in edgewise when she was well and then when altzheimers set in we wished we could hear her voice. She couldn't even communicate at all near the end and didn't know any of us anymore. She was going to be 84 this May 30/2005 and she passed away May 22/2005 . She is gone but in our hearts forever. (3 weeks ago today).
I am glad your mom is doing better. I will be thinking about her and you.
Thanks for caring about others even though you have problems of your own to deal with.
I will keep you posted about my procedure.
Take care

Re: How much Vicodin is too much!!!

dear lyn,
one of the many hats i wear is helping people go thru the process of dying and the adaptation of family members to the empty place in their lives. knowing your mom will always be a part of you will sustain you over the years. my dad died 29 years ago. i was 21. we still have long conversations within my mind.
during the 7 weeks i just spent with my mom i was always aware each memory may be the last. i understand. last june my birth father died. i spoke at his memorial even tho i did not know him. i went for his family.
you come here anytime and pour out your feelings to me, to all of us. allow yourself to cry. tears honor the life of your mother. let the world see your love for her. never, never be uncomfortable with showing your love thru the tears that must come. you are never old enough to be without your mom. it is just a fact.
within you each word, each laugh, each look, each hug is still there. always and forever you have that.
peace little sister, peace,
bluelakelady

Lyn In Michingan:

I had to respond to your question about whether taking 3 vicodin a week was too much. I remember many years ago thinking the same thing when I first developed chronic pain (fibromyalgia, back problems w/surgery, diabetic pain, arthritis, etc.). I was so worried about getting addicted. Unfortunately, back then, they did not have these types of forums, the internet, or at least not that I knew of....in order to help me understand the nature of these meds and what others are taking for their pain.

Each day I take 120 mg. of compounded long acting hydrocodone (equivalent to 24 vicodins) a day, plus 10 mg. breakthrough tablet available each day. The medicine is specially made at a pharmacy so as to remove the potentially harmful tylenol ingredient, which can damage your liver with excessive use over a long period of time. Of course, I gradually worked up to this amount over the years as my body became tolerant to the amount of med. I was taking, requiring me to need more meds to maintain the same level of pain control (usually increased it about once every couple years or so). I assure you, three vicodin a week is relatively nothing compared to others who suffer from chronic pain requiring narcotics. Do not let anyone tell you that it is. In fact, from what I read, I doubt that this is even remotely sufficient to cover your pain. Don't let people tell you that you will become addicted, as only a very, very small percentage of people develop a psychological addiction (desiring the narcotic for the "high" instead of for pain relief).

If you go to the chronic pain board you will read about people taking much larger amounts of pain meds than I do (methadone, morphine, oxycontin, etc.). So, in perspective, not to worry, you are not overdoing it in anyway!

I wish you much relief and a peace-filled day!

cb

It's no wonder people have a hard time dealing with me!! So if I give you some stupid answer, know it's my nauty brain speaking! I do wish you luck on your procedure. I certainly hope it gives you the relief you need. Keep us posted.

Oh Lord it's me again. The nerve drug I'm taking is Neurontin. It's not the only one out there. Your doc should know what's available.
