fibro flare up after car wreck?

I'm new to the fibro board. I was dx'd with it 5 years ago at around age 22. I've recently been doing very well and seem to have had it under control with normal activities. However, I also have TMJ disorder and had my 5th surgery this past October and accompanying Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy in the jaw/face area (nerve/pain disorder) and depression. I was in a car accident (rear-ended) 2 days ago. The soreness really hit yesterday. My jaw hurts, neck and back, shoulder and ankle all hurt. I started running fevers again yesterday and this morning glands under my arms are extremely sore and about marble sized. Can a car accident send you into a flare up? What should I do?

Re: fibro flare up after car wreck?

Hiya kayte04,

Welcome to our family. You have certainly come to the right place for support and understanding.

Your car accident would certainly cause a flare of your fibro symptoms. The thing is though, have you been checked for whiplash in connection with your jaw, neck and back? If not, I would suggest that this be done asap. These are three places that I suffered dreadful whiplash with when I was rear ended. Please do go and see about this.

Any trauma like the one you talk of can cause inflammation and this in turn will make your body go into flares of muscle soreness and burning. Make sure you take any given medications regularly, and try if you can to rest and take care of yourself until you feel more able to be a little active. Did you actually go to the ER after the accident? If not, go as soon as you can because you need to be checked over properly.

Running a fever is not good, and this again is something you should check on. Swollen glands under the arms isn't something I can comment on as I really can't diagnose in any way. Think of it though, you have suffered a major trauma to your body. You do need to get checked out. If you leave things, you can run the risk of serious problems arising.

Take care and let us know how you go on.

Re: fibro flare up after car wreck?

welcome kayte,
ouch! your poor body. you have my deepest empathy. i do hope you were checked out by a doctor. so very important. you will hurt in places you forgot you had after a car accident. thank heavens you walked away.
you just may fall in love with all of us here. i have. good, kind people come here.
please post when you feel up to it and let us know how you are feeling. rest, drink plenty of water and remember to breath deeply and slowly. breath is so important when we are in pain. and it is the time we forget to breath, or we breath shallowly.
peace,
bluelakelady
ps. i got a whiplash in 1973. i also have tmj like you do. insist on having your neck cared for. i did not, shucks i was 18 at the time. i had no idea the problems that could arise later in life from a whiplash that went untreated.

Re: fibro flare up after car wreck?

Yes, I went to the urgent care center the night it happened and had neck x-rays. I have an old chipped vertebrae in my neck that kind of freaked the dr out! I told him it was old but he put me in a cervical collar for the night until a radiologist could clear it. I'm taking flexeril for muscle spasms and have a standing rx for lortab but am trying to avoid that because of finals next week. I will see my chiropractor this coming Monday and see my oral surgeon the following Monday for a TMJ check and he will do a cat scan then to see if there's any damage. For now though, I'm just terribly in pain, depressed, and stuck in self-pity. I've been doing so well lately and I hate the thought of backsliding.
Any suggestions????

Re: fibro flare up after car wreck?

Hello kayte04,

Everything that is happening or going to happen will take time. You are bound to be feeling that things are taking a backwards step. Pain and depression hit like a ten ton truck when I had my accident. It is such a natural way to be. Self pity is not the words I would use, but you have had such a traumatic thing happen, you are bound to be thinking about your own self. This is you time until things are sorted out, and the thing I would suggest is that you come here as often as you can with any questions about anything that is bothering you, and we will all be here to talk to you and offer our support.

Take care
