Talking Finally diagnosed (and not with craziness!)!!!!!!!

So I went to see the neurologist today and after over a year I have been finally diagnosed! I have fibromyalgia! The neurologist pressed all those places on me and some of them hurt soo bad and some still kinda hurt! I'm so glad that I finally have been diagnosed! Now I can begin the road to less pain and more sleep before I completely flunk my way out of school!
The neurologist is suggesting to my normal doctor that I see this really good rheumatologist nearby who has done tons of work with fibro and in the mean time wants to put me on triciclyic antidepressants? Elavil or something, anybody have any input about this? Anywayz, I'm just real happy about that so I thought I'd share!
XOXOXOXO
Kelley

We are not crazy, but Fm sure is a crazy dd. Glad you got the dx, not that I am happy to know you have FM but it makes you feel better to know what you are dealing with.

Lots of luck, Linda

I did not have very good luck with elavil (amitriptyline) it gave me a hangover the next day and really didn't help me. Some people have very good luck with it though so give it a try and see what happens.

Re: Finally diagnosed (and not with craziness!)!!!!!!!

Like Glojer I also had no luck with Elavil. It made me hallucinate and I also felt like I had a tremendous hangover. Many people I know have the same reaction, however you may be different.

Elavil is a very old medication and a lot of docs offer it up right away. IMO, it is out dated and there are many other better meds out there.

It does make us feel better to know what is going on with us. I can remember when I was diagnosed if I could I would have done cartwheels.

Take care, have a good day.

Peace and love, Hangin

Re: Finally diagnosed (and not with craziness!)!!!!!!!

Thanks for the support everybody, I kinda feel like I always have a hangover anyway without medication so who knows with that... I was put on Flexeril a while ago for a 'severe tmj problem' and that made me feel a lot better but sometimes I would hallucinate (not sure if that is a normal reaction or not...) My doctor wants to stear clear of narcotics.. he also said that Elavil will probably make me gain weight since it is really easy for me to gain (and oddly also lose) weight, did it make anyone else gain weight or anything?

Re: Finally diagnosed (and not with craziness!)!!!!!!!

My doc put me on elevil, first 10mg and then 20mg, it really did nothing for me. Now I am on Flexeril, don't know yet if I am getting anything for that. For me the thing that helps the most is heat and tramadol. I usually take 3 pills a day usually every 5 hours. I don't know if that is good for me but it allows me to semi function some days. Although alot of days that doesn't help so I think you have to go through trial and error (which doesn't seem like a good thing to do when it comes to medication) but we don't really have a basic normal condition either. Heat is what also helps me. I have headaches all day everyday and I still don't have anything to help me with that, otc meds just don't do a thing for me in that regard. Don't know if I was any help but I hope you will find something that works in your favor
Take Care, Avrod

Re: Finally diagnosed (and not with craziness!)!!!!!!!

Hey Avrod, sorry to hear about your troubles, I feel ya with the all day headaches, it was the first thing I started to go into the doctor for all that time ago. I never found anything that made them go away, migraine medicine didn't help. Thanks for the input, good luck with everything!

Re: Finally diagnosed (and not with craziness!)!!!!!!!

Hi Avrod,

Sorry that you are having those terrible headaches. At times I am laid up for days with them..I went through an eiiht month period of having them everyday also, all day. Hard to wake up in the morning with headaches and go to sleep with them. Have you ever thought of acupuncture or chiro. It can help. Both of them gave me relief. It wasn't total but it was something.

I am with you on the heat. I thought dry heat was good, however when I tried moist heat I have a lot more relief.

Take care. Hope you feel better.

Peace and love, Hangin

Re: Finally diagnosed (and not with craziness!)!!!!!!!

I am very afraid of Chiro's. When I got in my car accident last Sept., everybody kept telling me to go to a chiro. So I finally did, it ended up that I had to bulging discs in my lower back and I should have gotten an MRI done first before seeing the chiro, my back dr. says that the chiro might have done more harm than good. So now I am scared. Does anybody know why an accident can make you have fibro? That is so weird to me. I am very knew with all of the terminology and everything that is incorporated with this condition, that it really is blowing my mind. That is why I am on this site all of the time reading past threads, it is so interesting when I find something and it really looks like this person is peeking through my window and telling my story.

Re: Finally diagnosed (and not with craziness!)!!!!!!!

I think most of us were dxed as a result of a trauma, maybe that we destined for this dd, I have no idea. I know mine started after being put in a head lock When i worked in a convalescent home.

Hugs, Linda

Re: Finally diagnosed (and not with craziness!)!!!!!!!

I have no idea what spurred Fibro for me..I was never really in an accident or anything.. I think I may have had it even when I was really young-I remember having terrible backaches and sleeping on a heating pad every day when I was in like kindergarten and I had nightmares a lot as a child too..

Re: Finally diagnosed (and not with craziness!)!!!!!!!

I remember reading a few years ago that a large percentage of people with fibro have some sort of back or spinal problem. It specifically stated that some had one leg shorter or some sort of hip displacement. I have all of these, plus I have been in car accidents and also fell off a second floor porch when I was like 9 or 10 years old. There probably is something to the trauma to our body thing.

Re: Finally diagnosed (and not with craziness!)!!!!!!!

I read somewhere maybe from here that they think it's our pain receptors in our brain that isn't functioning right. Is that what anyone else had heard? If that was the case why hasn't someone done research on it? Maybe they could find a cure or at least a medication that would treat that. I'm not even sure that is true. It is just something that I heard from somewhere. That is what happened in my car accident, I ended up with 2 bulging discs and had to see a specialist, (loved him) I still have alot of pain in my lower back, I guess I always will now. Take care

Re: Finally diagnosed (and not with craziness!)!!!!!!!

When my neurologist diagnosed me with fibro that is what he told me is one major philosophy-pain receptors in brain malfunctioning. I'm sure there is probably research going on about it right now
