Can't win...new problem

I have a new problem. Isn't that just great.
For some reason I've been getting full faster, can't eat near as often or near as much as I used to. Before anyone thinks it's an aging thing I'll remind ya'll I'll only be 37 in April. A few days ago it started getting worse. I would say better if it only meant me losing weight. Worse because this hurts. I can't say exactly what day it started really bothering me but Tuesday night was bad and Wed. was horrible. Billy Don took me out to eat at Chili's, I ate a few of the onion blossom thing, about 5 fries and couldn't even finish 1/2 of the hamburger, it hurt so bad. Like a lump where the hollow of my throat is, I bent my head to help food go down, about the time it felt like the food had past there it felt like another lump in the mid. of my back about where my bra strap is, that hurt so bad I automatically straightened my back really fast.
I saw my reg. dr. He's getting in touch with a gut dr. said I need that test run where they put the tube down the throat into the stomach, the tube has a camara and light. I forget what it's called. That sounds like a lot of fun.
Have any of you had anything like this? 3 friends have asked me if I thought this had anything to do with me getting rearended. I have no idea. What do ya'll think? I told them I'd mention it to the dr. I see Mon. One that the lawyer recommended and that I'd also say something to the gut dr., whenever I get to see him. My neck and throat, muscles, hurt worse now than they did right after the wreck, so I have no idea what's going on with my health this time.
Could it be related to the fibro? I know people with fibro have a weaker immune system, which can do all sorts of things to the body. Whoever is on this healthboard that's had fibro the longest...do you ever get to where there's not always something new related to fibro and the immune system popping up?
I'm sorry I sound so down. I think I must have sounded worse when I saw my dr. I told him that I'm falling apart, he said no, I looked to him like I'm still put together. I told him he should see me from my point of view. I know it'll all get better sometime, I just wish when it does get better, it'd stay that way long enough for me to actually take notice.
Anyway, if any of you have any ideas about my new problem, I'd sure appreciate ya'll letting me know.
Thanks, April

Hi April! I was diagnosed with fibro just this last January. I started having alot of problems last fall. One of them was GI issues. One night after eating it felt like my food was completely stuck in my esophagus. It was a terrible pain and pressure. (I also felt it in my upper back like you). I ended up in the ER that night. A week or so later I had an endoscopy done. That's the tube they stick down your throat. All was OK. The Dr. told me I have GERD. Since then, I've had intermittent trouble with lots of GERD, heartburn and sometimes trouble swallowing. Sometimes it feels like my food gets stuck either in my throat or in my lower esophagus. For me, I definitely feel like it's related to the fibro. It's definitely changed the way I look at food. I'm always worried if what I eat will cause heartburn, get stuck, make my stomach hurt, etc. It's a pain. And just so you know, the scope was a piece of cake. No pain, nothing. Hope you feel better!

Re: Can't win...new problem

Hi April:
Sorry to hear you are having gastro difficulties. This problem sounds sort of fibro-ish to me. You should probably still follow up to make sure the problem you are describing is nothing else, however. If nothing shows up, you will know it is fibro. I can't tell you how many tests I have had done and nothing is ever wrong on the tests results. I guess that can be good, as well as bad. Wouldn't it be nice if the doctor could just cut out something and it would all go away!

GERD with trouble swallowing, sore throat, IBS are all typical symptoms. I noticed what you ate is not too good a thing to be eating if you have the gastric symptoms that can come with fibro. I would suggest a low carb diet - no more onion rings and french fries. Eat that burger with only half the bun! Eat slowly, chew thoroughly, and don't gulp your food. Eat lots of fresh vegetables and fruit, 100% whole wheat bread, low-sugar yogurt (some yogurts have a whopping 21-23 grams of sugar). Dannon has a light and fit yogurt with live culures that has only 6 grams of sugar - much better option - plus its non-fat. It may be that if you start to eat a healthier lifestyle, you will see an improvement in how you feel, and you will have more energy. The services of a nutritionist might be a good investment.

Another thought is you could have a yeast overload, or candida, going on. When you eat a lot of sugar, drink wine, eat a lot of carbs, the sugar that breaks down from these particular foods feeds the candida and makes it worse. Do some research.

Take charge of your health and investigate what YOU need to do to acquire a better state of health. The doctors try, but I have found they don't always know how deeply fibro affects your health. Things are getting better in the medical community concerning fibromyalgia, but the progress, to me, seems to be very slow. For instance, I know more about it than my internist who is my G.P. My fibro doctor really knows his stuff, however!

You take care!
Blessings,
Kirstee

Re: Can't win...new problem

i can relate to your difficulties, luckily ive never had a sweet tooth and had a low fat diet, eating a normal sized meal is near impossible, i prefer small frequent meals. i never eat fried food or pastries it would be too painful and i have fainted in the past with a standard size meal. the swallowing problem can happen without any food, but thats a case of a small food or drink particle going down the wrong tube to my lungs. even saliva can do it. i'm careful about the consistancy of the food i eat, something thick like peanut butter would make me choke. my diet has to have enough protein for my liver and kidneys, but not too much. i eat a lot of vegetables and fruit, probably potato is the main carbohydrate in my diet. often i eat protein and carbs seperately, seems to digest better, less discomfort. may have fresh fish or meat with vegetables for one meal and a baked potato with salad for another. my digestive system is happier that way. i don't eat desserts, im intolerant to chocolate and high fat foods. i eat fruit instead. i dont eat bread often, when i do i dont use any butter or spreads, just fill it with the salad leaves, toms, cucumber whatever. tried the yogurts with friendly bacteria and similar for years, dont eat it now, dont feel any different, my bowels played up more when i took them. happy eating

Re: Can't win...new problem

hi april,
catch your breath. the test is doable. make sure they give you drugs to make you loopy first. i have done it and the one up my bum too. at the same time, no less!
i am living proof you can live and thrive on little or no food. i make up for it by drinking tons of water and those supplimental drinks. i take vitamins. the stress of worry will only make matters worse. when i can eat i eat as healthy as my body will allow. salads, steamed veggies, rice, pasta.
i have found mexican food goes down when nothing else will. i feel there is something in the spice that turns on my hunger.
for sure keep up with your doctor and tests. there is much peace of mind in a doc saying, nothing wrong there!
peace,
bluelakelady
ps. be aware and careful not to do what i did at first. i was so freaked out that when i could eat i would shove the food down as fast as i could. big mistake.
