Lightbulb New Medicine for Fibro

Hi everyone, hope all is going well for you. I haven't been on here in a while, I've been so sick. I had a flare up a couple weeks ago and my body just hasn't been the same since, I think I greatly underestimated the effects of Fibromyalgia. During this time my doctor has been wonderful and has been such a blessing in my life. He keeps up on fibromyalgia and the different treatments and medicines that are coming out.

He recently put me on Mirapex, which is a prescription that originally came out in 1997 for those suffering from parkinson's disease, Mirapex may be able to reduce your fibromyalgia symptoms significantly. In particular, Mirapex may be able to:

*reduce muscle pain
*decrease muscle stiffness
*improve range of motion and mobility

I've been taking it for 2 weeks now and have noticed small improvements. I'm still increasing my doses in order to get to the recommended 4.5 mg dosage. One of the major effects i've noticed is significant weight loss, which is nice for those of us FM sufferers who have gained weight from taking our other medications.

I will keep everyone updated but in the mean time may I suggest that you put "Mirapex and Fibromyalgia" in your search engine and see what information you can find, here's a website to get you started on finding out more:

Good Luck- Candi

Re: New Medicine for Fibro

I have been on Mirapex as a last resort med for about a month. I did not initially tolerate the drug very well and have had to work my way up to the 4.5 recommended dose. So far, I cannot tell it is helping me, but I am not quite up to the 4.5 dose. The one really nice side affect is I fill full most of the time. I have gained 40 pounds in the past two years and am looking forward to lightening up a bit. My doctor has only given this medication to one other patient. I do not know how that patient is doing. I did not ask, as I did not want to bias my personal opinion of how this drug works for me.

I am desparate for relief. By the way, my current doctor, a Rheumatologist I've been with since 1997, will not give me any type of medication to help me sleep. I can't help but wonder why he would take such a stubborn stance regarding sleep meds. I am thinking of changing doctors since I have moved recently and making the drive across town to my current doctor is very draining. I understand the sleep deprivation is a huge part of Fibro. It would be wonderful to get a regular good nights sleep and I am sure it would help with the Fibro.

Post Re: New Medicine for Fibro

I had been with my Rhumie for over 13 years. He did not HEAR me anymore...never took new symptoms (I'm getting on in age now) seriously...just wrote scripts for drugs without looking at me anymore. He DIDN'T TRY to help me any longer. Especially with pain meds. I think you can stay with a doc tooooo long.

I'm now going to see an internist (no rheumie) and getting referred on to the pain clinic at the University here. They are treating pain with METHADONE which I hear is AWESOME.

I'm 27 years down the road with this now, 57 years old, and it has not gotten any better, but only worse. I don't endure the pain like I use to. Now add age problems to it (arthritis, facet joint, yada yada) and you have a very sick lady at only 57. I am in desperate need of pain relief. I have been taking ultram 4 a day for over 10 years. Why wouldn't my old doc think I needed a change. Crazy. Crazy that we who suffer so have to beg for help because a few abuse the market.

Blessings to you and YES, I hope you will move on to a Doc who will help you get some SLEEP. That's nuts........that's usually the FIRST THING THEY DO, and so important.

Re: New Medicine for Fibro

dear marcia and blessings,
there are thousands and thousands of doctors. fire the one you have and shop around. it is worth the hassel when you find that one special helper. i went thru 17 doctors before i found laura. along with 6 other good caring doctors we take care of me. mostly i do the all the work. as it should be. they assist me.
do not settle for less than you require. do not victimize yourself by staying with a doctor you do not feel totally safe with. take charge. a doctor is hired help, just like a plummer. if the plummer does a lousy job you won't be calling him again, right? same thing. we pay them, not the other way around.
and she leaps lightly off her doctor soap box once again, giggle.
peace and empowerment,
bluelakelady
