dry eyes ?

Hi All,
Just a quick question-- I've read some of your posts about "dry eyes" being a sign of fibro. My eyes are always bloodshot, especially my right eye! Is that a sign of dry eyes? I'm just not sure what you guys mean by "dry eyes". I mentioned this to my hemo in Jan.(my red eyes) but he didn't seem concerned at all!
Thanks!

Re: dry eyes ?

hi elphers,
redness is a sign of dry eyes. i use over the counter drops twice a day for dry eye and i am fine. dry eye is when your tear ducts are not producing enought tears to keep your eyes moist. it is an easy fix. since we have so few of those this delights me.
my eye doctor put a strip of paper under my lower eyelid to measure my moisture level. when he came back to remove it, it had dried to my lid and they had to add drops just to get it unstuck. some of it is age, some is fms, and some is the meds i take that dry out my body.
my eyes just feel scratchy when i blink. sometimes they itch. they are always red due to one of the herbal remedies my doctor and i incorporate into my health care.
peace,
bluelakelady

I hadn't heard that, but interestingly enough my eyes are dry. A lot of people experience dry eyes as feeling like their eyes are scratchy or like the eyelids are rough. If your eyes are red but not otherwise uncomfortable then I don't think you have dry eyes. Maybe you could put in some lubricating drops (NOT visine for redness) and see if it feels like your eyelids are softer and smoother. If so then you probably have dry eyes and just didn't know the feeling of it.

Re: dry eyes ?

Hello thre,

Might be worth looking into Sjogrens syndrome. I hve this and it not only causes dry eyes, but mor commonly the mouth and lot of other dryness problems within the body.

Just a thought. Tke care

Re: dry eyes ?

I have dry eyes, partly as a side effect of the medications I take. My opthmalogist put plugs in my tear ducts to help retain the moisture in my eyes, and I use an over-the-counter moisturizing eye drop daily. My eyes are much more moist, and the damage that was apparent on my eye have healed. If you have chronic dry eyes, I suggest you see an eye doctor.

Re: dry eyes ?

my mom has fibro as well, and she suffers awful with dry eyes AND dry mouth. like the others said, some of it is due to the meds, some of it is due to fibro, some due to Sjogrens syndrome, but her eyes feel so dry that it feels like she has sand in them. Her eyes have never been bloodshot tho, maybe thats cause of the drops. She does have special drops as well as special mouthwash that helps promote tears as well as saliva for her mouth. Are you feeling anything else in your eye or is it just red?

Re: dry eyes ?

I go along with goldenwings: It would be importand for your Rheumy dr. or even your general dr. to test for Sjogren's Syndrome. SSA and SSB blood test. I have both Sjogren's and Fibro plus other blessings. My eyes give me alot of real PAIN and are severly dry. I use drops with oil base and NO preservatives...all day long. Dry mouth also comes with Sjogren's...REAL dry mouth.
Good Luck and Good Health
