Has Anyone tried one Of Those So Called Clinics For Fibro?

Just wondering if anyone has gone to one of those clinics where they claim to treat Fibro? I called a few of them and they want $250 dollars just for the consultation. Yet they give you no information on what kind of treatment they have to offer unless you pay the fee first. This sounds like a ripoff to me. I tried to pin them down on if the treatments are drugs, natural treatments, acitputure, etc, but I could not get any info out of them.

RStarre:
I went to see a endochronoligist who treats fibromyalgia exclusively. I wasn't sure if that was what you meant by a clinic. He did a great job, but my first consultation was $400.00 (thankfully, covered by insurance). I have improved steadily since seeing him. It is difficult to sort quacks from the real jewels.

Re: Has Anyone tried one Of Those So Called Clinics For Fibro?

I went to one of the biggest pain clinics in Pennsylvania. It took me almost 2 hours to get there. I had a 9 AM appointment which was killing me because my pain is worse in the morning. So I managed to get there on time. Then I had to sit in a waiting room for an hour, then I went into a tiny hospital room and waited another half hour to see someone. The doctor asked me about 10 questions then he left. Then I had to take a standard drug test which is required of all patients seeking medication as a form of treatment. The nurse came back about 20 minutes later to tell me the dr went on his lunch break and would be back in about 45 minutes. I hurt so bad I couldnt take it anymore and I wanted to leave. She told me I could reschedule another appoinment to come back down again. I told her how impossible it was for me to do that. Then she told me that it probably was not worth my time becuase they do not prescribe pain medication to people my age (I am 23) because it is so addictive. She said the options I had were to either have aqua therapy or epidurals every 3 weeks. If I opted for the epidural treatment someone else would have to drive me because I cant drive afterwards and there is a waiting period of a 6 hour stay afterwards. I checked out the facility where they do the aquatherapy and it was disgusting and dirty. There was no way I was going to get into there. When I was leaving they told me they would call me with the dr's diagnosis before the end of the day. That was over a month ago. I have contacted them 3 times but no one has called me back yet. I talked to my pharmacist about pain clinics and she told me that most of the people going there are already addicted to pain killers and just looking to get more pills. And most of the time they do get them. So in my opinion based on my own experiences I do not reccomend wasting your time and money seeing a dr at a pain clinic. Most of the time they deal with people who have localized pain and they really cant do anything to help you anymore than your family physician can. I recently switched doctors and it the best thing I ever did. If you are in pain and your doctor isnt doing anything to help you I suggest finding a new doctor who can help you better.

Re: Has Anyone tried one Of Those So Called Clinics For Fibro?

Right now I take 50 mg ultram and 800 mg iproprion 3 times a day and 50 mg of elavil a night. My other dr prescribed wellbutrin 150 mg and 150 mgs of zoloft a day which only made me hurt more it seemed. Some people seem to think that antipsychotic and antidepressent meds will work for fibro but they didnt for me.

Re: Has Anyone tried one Of Those So Called Clinics For Fibro?

I also went to a very highly recommended pain clinic. The doctor there said, well maam, it seems you have fibro. i told him, sir ive known that for numerous years NOW, i didnt need a diagnosis, my regular doctor (who was the one who diagnosed my fibro) asked me to come to the pain clinic to see if you had a better way of controlling the pain. (my reg doc had me on lortab and soma for years before seeing this pain guy).
First thing the pain doc says is, well, i know we're a pain management clinic, but i dont give you pain pills. He said youre 50 (yea thats right 50, an adult) and i wont turn you into an addict, i told him i had been on lortab and soma for about 5 yrs now, he says no. in my clinic youll stop the pain pills, and i asked him what he would replace it with, i laughed when he said guafenesin. He said in my clinic i treat people with fibro with lots of good exercise, fresh air and guafenesin. My jaw fell open. i thought THIS is what he calls pain control??? guafenesin that i had already tried for 2 yrs (while taking lortab and soma) and had no change at all with? now he wanted to take my pain meds and put me on something that hasnt even been proven to work for everybody? my husband and i laughed and said this is a crock. a scam, and walked out of there, with the doc walking behind us saying wont you at least try it, and i can see you once a week to see how youre doing? which part of "ive tried it for 2 yrs and no change" did he not understand?

Welbitrin also made me hurt more. That is because it is more of an adrenelan stimulor rather than a Serotonin stimulator according to my doctor. You can take Elavil? That drug put me to sleep for a few days and I could not think at all on that stuff. I also am on Tramadol. Thank goodness for that drug. I don't know how I'd get by wouthout it. Not sure I read it right. You are on 150 mg of Ultram and 2400mg Alive/Advil a day?

Re: Has Anyone tried one Of Those So Called Clinics For Fibro?

During the day i take 150 mg of ultram, 2400 mg of prescription iproprion and 50 mg of elavil at night. It does help me sleep but I am noticing my pain getting worse in the mornings. Ive been sleeping downstairs with my kids for the last week because I cant even get them out of bed in the morning. Today I was awake at 9 but couldnt actually get up till almost 1, and I still hurt.

Re: Has Anyone tried one Of Those So Called Clinics For Fibro?

Someone researcher did a study of the gusifatanin..whatever you called it ( the stuff in cough medicine) and found that it didn't do anything for Fibro patients. What a quack. Exersise and fresh air. LOL. Everytime I try to exersise I'm in pain for four days afterwards. I cannot get thru most days without Tramadol. I can't imagine what I'd do or how I'd get by without it. Some of these doctors are such a joke. Do they have any idea how much discomfort us Fibro patients are in?

Re: Has Anyone tried one Of Those So Called Clinics For Fibro?

yea what was so sad is this clinic was "highly recommended", cant imagine what the other ones around here must be like.
heck , my pain is so severe, and the fatigue so exhausting that i even went as far as getting interviewed for a clinical study on a "new" drug for fibro. i was that desperate, but then when i got all the information, the man told me it was a 7 month long study, and id have to leave, get OFF all other medication to make sure that if i got relief from their drug it would be credited to their drug. i said ,uhm no thanks then. later when i "thought" about it, i thought that was a dumb idea, wanting to try a new drug that was going to be tested on me, just for the slim chance of hopefully, helping me. i thought , what if the side effects were worse than the fibro, or permanent side effects that would effect my organs or something, desperation, not a good thing .

Re: Has Anyone tried one Of Those So Called Clinics For Fibro?

I too take Ultram, and also, Cymbalta. My concern is, I have been taking Ultram for 4 years with Fibro and I a often worry about the side effects down the road with the Ultram. Is anyone familiar? Thanks!

Re: Has Anyone tried one Of Those So Called Clinics For Fibro?

JEnnetti ...was the drug called Mylacipan? I also tried to sign up for it but got rejected because one on my liver enzymes we two points higher than normal. If that is the drug, I did manage to order it from England. It seems to be another form or variation of an anti depressant. So I never took it for any length of time. Only a few days. I didn't like it. But I guess I should have given it a chance.
