I won't put anyone through all of the details of my 8 years of pain, doctors, diagnosis, and nothing working...
My OB/GYN finally told me I had fibromyalgia and that he could fix it.
He had me order a book from Amazon called The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook 2nd addition (by Clair Davies, Amber Davies, David G. Simons)
The book shows various trigger points as they are related to the location of the pain, describes the massage technique you can use to get the knots out, and was written by someone suffering from the pain themselves.
It is an invaluable book!
He also started giving me trigger point injections, which have stopped the chronic pain enough that now when I get a new knot my husband can use the massage technique described in the book and have it out w/in a few minutes. The point injections that he did consisted of marcaine and kenelog. He could only do two at a time, because of the kenelog (a steriod), so it took a few months to get all of the tender spots injected, and a couple of them I had to have done twice, but after each injection the pain was gone w/in 5 minutes!
He uses a 27 guage syringe, 5% kenelog, and I'm not sure about the marcaine, I gave the paper I had it written on to my dad.
Hope that helps someone!
It's wonderful that you've found something that works for your fibro. I've recently used trigger point massage on recurringly painful spots on the back of my neck, and have found it quite helpful.
May I ask, how long do the injections last? -- I mean, once you get the point injected, how long are you pain-free?
Thanks :-)
For some of the points one injection and its been almost a year now and still no pain. For the worst ones, two or three injections, and the knots still come back here and there, but hubby's gotten so good at the massage that if I can get him to rub my back, he has those out w/in a few minutes. The doctor said they would come back, but now that I know what it is I'll need to rub them out, have someone rub them out, or come back in for an injection.
