Newly Diagnoised with Fibromyalgia - Fibromyalgia Message Board

I was diagnoised with Fibromyalgia this week. I was diagnoised with Lupus approx. 10 years ago. I am 38 years old and besides being tired all the time and severe muscle and joint pain I have put on approx. 35 lbs. in the last year. I am very scared to go on any medication due to some of the side effects. Does anyone have any advice on medications that don't cause weight gain. Thanks for any and all help....I really need it.

i am on 7 different meds and i think that one of the most important thing to do is to drink plenty of water. also a good thing to do is have plenty of fiber in your diet to help keep the stuff in your body moving good.
although i should take my own advice on this one, exercise is super important. any movement is better than no movement.
my meds are Norco, Soma, Cymbalta, Requip, Rozerem, birth control pills, and high blood pressure medication.
i am 31 and have gained i think 20pds. i am now trying to lose and doing all these things listed and so far so good.
with our condition it is so hard to get the exercise that we need and it is so much easier for us to put on the weight wether its due to meds or not so i think if we can keep our wieght as close to what we need to we should be alot better.

Thank you so much for your reply. I think I am overwhelmed and a bit depressed. I work out 6 days a week because it does help with the tightness in my joints and muscles, but I am having a difficult time with sleep and even though I am working out so hard (burning 700 calories each workout) I am still uncomfortable, bloated and gaining weight. My Dr. wants to put me on an antidepressant, but I am leary because of the side effects. Even though I dont feel well I know that "the present is not permenant". I am taking it one minute at a time. How do you manage your fibro? Do you find that your 7 medications help? I really appreciate your response. Have a great day and hope today is a good day for yoou health wise!

the meds do help. it has taken me a number of yrs to actually find what meds work best for me. some people will have their opinions on this matter because they may think that meds aren't the way to go but to each his own. i have been taking anti depressants since i was 18yrs old. i have tried so many and of course the all the new ones that come out. so far Cymbalta seems to help with depression but not with the pain. mentally i feel alot better but don't get me wrong i still have my moments.
to manage my fibro i get lots of rest. i stay home now due to pain so i really rest when i need to.
i also do yoga when i can and that is such a big help, so relaxing. there is this one show that comes on Oxygen called Inhale. it comes on super early so i use my DVR and do it when i am ready.
there is one thing that i do that i need to stop and that is drinking coffee. i love it and i know that it would really help if i stopped drinking it.
heat, heat, heat, luv it and it helps.
let me know if you any questions, my life is consumed by this illness and i do lots of research so let me know.

I see a lot of posts talking about coffee ( I asume you mean caffientated) and avoiding it. I was drinking decaf for years ( got tachycardia when was hyperthyroid - now hypothyroid - had I-131 radioactive treatment in 1980) and recently started having some caff. coffee mixed with decaf in the mornings and I have found it really helps with the morning tiredness. Without it my legs are rubber until noon and go from chair to chair- have to go to work at 7AM so have found the boost helps.

One other thing - I see people post about Yoga - how do you get started? Is the show on Oxygen yoga or are there other shows on?
