Question FIbro & Pain...Are you treated properly??

For those of you that have FM...do you have trouble with physicians taking your pain seriously?

My Rheum will only give me Darvocet(which does nothing but make me tired) and Zanaflex(which does help me at night with muscle spasms).

I had to ask my primary doctor for something stronger so I could function. She gave me Vicodin 5 mg but would only let me have 10 pills and she told me she would not RX it long term.

I understand about the potential for addiction when on pain meds (I am a RN), but what about quality of life....I have had to quit my job and am filing for disablility because of the pain/fatigue and memory problems.

Does anyone else have this problem with getting pain relief?

Re: FIbro & Pain...Are you treated properly??

hey there, believe me you are not alone. for most of us we have to go through doctor after doctor to finally have someone who actually takes us serious.
sometimes the best route to go may be to try a pain management doctor.
maybe you have thought about it.
i have had pain for 7yrs now and have been through the ringer with docs.
till this day and after all the research on Fibro i still had a chiro tell me that that "thats just what they tell you when they don't know whats wrong". that makes me so mad. he also said that i was to young to be hurting the way i do and i was like no sh*# sherlock. i am 31 and have 3 kids, 7, 4 and 1yrs old.
i stopped working to and have been dealing with Social Security for 4yrs now. i am in it for the long run. i have lost everything, but my family, and i know that i deserve the help. trust me if i could work i would've went back along time ago instead of losing our house.
can you tell i am a little bothered, lol.
anyway, hang in there and we are totally here for your support. you are not alone.

Re: FIbro & Pain...Are you treated properly??

To Girl75 I know what you mean, it took them over 25 years to diagnose me. I now was recently diagnosed with Rheumatoid. The pain was so bad, but the Rheumatoid is effecting the Fibro. Every part of my body hurts. I'm taking Methotraxate Lyrica Effexor Norco Percocet and Lunesta. Do you have troubles sleeping? I find I fall into a deep sleep, and I don't feel rested and this happens in the afternoon.

Re: FIbro & Pain...Are you treated properly??

I think it is common for us with FM to wake up in the mornings tired.

I had a sleep study and everything was OK but you could of fooled me because I know how tired I feel.

I even take afternoon naps some days because I can't stay awake.

My mom was dx with FM for about 15 years and then dx with RA too. With most auto-immune disorders if you have one you will be at higher risk for another.....I bet FM has auto-immune componets.

Re: FIbro & Pain...Are you treated properly??

To Froggy Frog, I know what you mean about Dr. I had a really good one in NY. Just moved to PA and my meds are not too bad. I'm on Norco and Percocet. Just diagnosed with RA. I'm on Methtrexate and I don't seem to notice any difference. She is looking to putting me on Embrel if Insurance Co. will allow it. Good luck with gettting some better meds, I hope it works out for you. God Bless

Re: FIbro & Pain...Are you treated properly??

It takes me forever to get pain meds. My primary would only give me ultram, it was until i was taking 200-250mg at a time before they finally switched me to darvocet (short term). Upong finding out it was short term i went to a pain management specialist...

I SEVERELY ASK FOR YOU TO FIND ONE THAT SPECIALIZES IN FIBRO!!

I went to a few and to put it bluntly (a quote from my first pain management specialist) i was told "We dont give pain medications to people like you becuse in 6 to 9 months you will be in severe pain again anyway" and was bluntly told to find anther rheumatologist as he wont be treating me.

Now i have all these attempts to get heavier pain meds in my files and i look like a drug seaker and im still barely able to walk cuz of pain. Do your research before you pick a doctor, the wrong ones will hurt you in the end .

Unhappy Re: FIbro & Pain...Are you treated properly??

Hi FroggyFog I'm new to this site, and I'm not so sure how to go about doing this. I did have a sleep test done in February, and the Dr. said that he did't believe in Fibro. I could have punched him in the face. We recently moved from New York to PA, so I had to find a new Rhumie. The one I found is pretty good. I wish I could have a stronger pain med. I'm on Norco and Percocet. But they don't like to give out controlled substances. I went through pt and that didn't work and then I was recently diagnosed with RA. I'm now on Methotrexate and I don't notice anything happening. She wants to put me on Enbrel if the Insurance Col allows it.

Would sombody please tell me if they have bad fog and the numbness in the hands and feet? I can just be sitting there, and it starts. Do you also have the pain in the hips that goes through the knees at night? I have that plus I have a bad back from a very serious fall that I took at work. I also have the depression that goes along with it for that I'm on Effexor, but I don't know if it's working or not. Maybe it's time to change med's. Please somebody respond, and let me know what you think. Dottie51

Re: FIbro & Pain...Are you treated properly??

it took me forever as well to get pain meds. my primary doctor finally told me i had been "flagged" and needed to go see a pain management doctor. He put me on fentanyl patches (25 mcg), one every 48 hours. He also prescribes lortab 10/500, 4 a day. My primary doc also gives me soma (muscle relaxers), 1 tab 4 times a day. im also on cymbalta (suppose to give me energy, blah, but does help with slight depression ive gotten now because of the pain). I take 1 elavil at night to help me sleep. when all is said and done, my body is still in pain, not as bad as it used to be, but still pretty bad and i cant do much. The fatigue is horrible. But, like i said, i went thru so many doctors, so many tests, so many who said it was just depression, or that i was getting older ( i was in my late 30's early 40 when he said that). To be pain free id have to be on some pretty heavy duty drugs, but then id probably be sleeping all the time, which sometimes sounds good to me, if i didnt have to feel the pain, but then what kind of life would that be? so, i take their drugs , shut up (cause i was told thats pretty much what i'll get and nothing more) and put up with the pain as best as i can. i used to be so very very active in life, this thing has totally changed my life.

Dottie, I have bad fibro fog and actually had a MRI of my brain because I mentioned to my primary doctor about getting confused one night driving home. I told my doc that it was probably just the FM but she didn't think FM would cause memory problems...YEAH RIGHT! Anyway everything was OK with the MRI but I chose to stop work(RN) because I was making mistakes and I didn't feel like I was giving safe nursing care. I have SI Joint dysfunction so my R hip always hurts especially at that time of the month. I have been on Effexor and now Cymbalta r/t depression that this pain/fatigue has caused. I do have pain in my feet and hands along with other places and I had some numbness when I was on Topamax for my migraines but none now(since I stopped that med).....I would look at the side effects of your meds to see if they are causing the numbness. Hope this helps. Froggyfog

Re: FIbro & Pain...Are you treated properly??

Jenetti, My husband is on MS Contin & Percocet for his pain and the doctors are still trying to find out what it is.....however I have a name for mine ..FM and I can't get s---. Sorry but it makes me mad. They act like FM doesn't hurt and to "just exercise" and that will help. I do take a muscle relaxer that helps (zanaflex) but I can only take it at night because it knocks me out. I want quality of life too. I defintely feel your pain. Froggyfog

Re: FIbro & Pain...Are you treated properly??

KittenPaws, thanks for the suggestion on finding a doctor who specializes in FM. I have tried but have yet to find one, but I haven't given up hope that somewhere in Arkansas there is one that would understand. Thanks again! Froggyfog

Re: FIbro & Pain...Are you treated properly??

I have given up for the moment. Upon my GP finding out i was preg, she ripped my pain meds and muscle relaxers from me and told me to get an OBGYN (he only will allow me to take tylenol!!!). Between teh fibro and undiagnosed Auto immune problem (they think lupus but my blood wont stay positive), tylenol does nothing lol.

Froggy i do understand how people w/o a diagnosis get better treatment then people with fibro. It sickens me. The pain makes me so depressed and sometimes i just feel like i shouldnt exist anymore - at least when your not alive you dont hurt, right? But i do keep going on (and yes i see a therapist). Sorry just going through a tough tiem right now, forgive me .

Dottie i have terrible fog and my feet and hands go numb a lot. But i dont know if its from teh fibro or not. I hope you are feeling better soon, hang in there (that goes for all of you too )

Re: FIbro & Pain...Are you treated properly??

KittenPaws, How far along are you? Is this your first child? I have two teenagers(girls). If you could find someone who has Chronic Pain and has been pregnant maybe they would know of some meds to suggestion to GYN doc.

GYN docs may not feel comfortable Rx the meds themselves so you might have to find a safe one for the baby and you and run it by them.

I understand about being tired of FM and aches/pains. Sometimes a person just needs to vent for awhile. So if you are having a bad time right now Vent away and know we are here for you.

Re: FIbro & Pain...Are you treated properly??

Hi Froggyfog, thanks for your message. I will look into the meds. I was most recently diagnosed with RA. I'm on methotrexate and folic acid and alot of other meds. So I don't know which is the fibro and which is the RA. 8 months we moved from Long Island, NY to Allentown PA and that ment I had to find a new Rumie which I did and she's great. She wants to start me on Enbril. She has to see if the Insurance Co. will go along with it. I get so depressed at times and I'm at my wits end. Thank God I'm retired from Food Service in a School. I don't know how I did it for all those years with the pain and I didn't miss a day of work. I'm so happy that I found this message board. You see I just learned the computer and my husband says he's created a monster. It's nice to be able to talk about things that my husband of 31 years wouldn't really understand. Have you heard anything about Enbrel? Like any bad side effects? When you have the chance please message me. I'd like to hear from you. Dottie51
