Question oxycontin

hi all. i am new to this board, obviously anyway, I have to take 240mg a day of oxycontin and I am only 32 yrs old. I also have had 2 cervical fusions and have cerebral palsy which I believe all of the above have contributed to my FM.
I am afraid of getting on methadone. Not because it is bad, but I don't think I would be able to still work at my job. It is the only job I can physically do as a nurse anymore. I am very fortunate.

Anyway, I an looking for some guidance on like Chinese herbs or something that I may try. I really want to stop the oxycontin, esp since I hope to have a baby one of these days, even tho the dr's say I can't. Well, I don't give up that easy!! Any suggestions would be great. Thanks again.

Re: oxycontin

Hi Robeano,

Sorry to hear you have multiple sources of chronic pain. Have you considered working with a pain clinic specialist, or if you are doing so already, switching to another doc? It may be possible to find a pro who will help you wean off the oxy onto some other combo of pain control.

If you have not already read the book, Pain Free 1 - 2 - 3 by Jacob Teitelbaum, MD., I encourage you to do so. This book has thoughtful commentary on many "alternative" and selfhelp recommendations, as well as for RX meds, for those suffering from chronic pain.

Best wishes.

Re: oxycontin

thank you so much for your reply!! I am getting ready to go to the pain clinic soon. for 6yrs now I have just been dealing with my pcp who is wonderful by the way, but I feel more can be done for me. I am also going to be attending FM classes. I will get the book asap. I am open to reading and trying anything at this point. It is hard to believe that just 7 yrs ago I had only migraines and slight twitching to 10/10pain daily. I am determined, as I know we all are on here, 2 live as closes as a normal life as possible. hope you have a wonderful day!!!thx again

Re: oxycontin

thank you both for your reply's. I am getting really frustrated. seems like I have to increase my dose every couple of months. do you know how the fentanyl patches work? that is our next step. at least that is what my pcp wants to try if we have to keep increasing. does fentanyl really work? thanks again. its nice to know i am not alone. i feel that way, alot of the time. it hard to tell friends and family you have FM, esp with the stigma out there right now. hugs to all
