I think I have fibromyalgia...need input and advice

Hello everyone. I am new here. Here's a little background on me: My name is Angela, I am 29 years old. Mother of two. Low blood pressure, thin to average body weight, petite. I have been diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, severe health anxiety and perhaps hypochondria, and depression. I am taking Celexa and Xanax. I also use herb sometimes. I am a non-smoker having quit after 15 years, been cigarette free for 9 months now. I used to binge drink and drink heavily but I have recently stopped doing that also.

I was doing a breast exam and I found a painful lump on the left underarm area. My doctor felt it and said it is fibroystic breast changes. He said it should go away after my period...well, it hasn't. It is still sore.

I noticed for months my chest has felt heavy and tight at times, concentrated on the left side. Perhaps these sensations were due to fibrocystic issues?

Anyway, I've been off my period for a week and no improvement.

I also suffer from weird discomfort above my left eye that my muscular specialist says is due to a trigger point in my neck. He also found one in my shoulder that he said was rock hard. I get discomfort in my head, neck, shoulders and lower back.

At the moment, my left underarm and breast is achy and sore and my lower left back feels achy as well.

I wonder why it seems my discomfort is all on the left? Perhaps that's just where my attention is focused?

I am so worried. I have not been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I don't think my doctor knows much about it. What kind of specialist should I see? I am tired of always worrying that something is wrong with me.

Do my symptoms sound like they are related to fibro?

***

Oh, and I wanted to mention the following: In Feb. I went to the ER with left side chest discomfort and tightness thinking it could be heart related. It wasn't. All tests and Xray fine.

In March I had a brain MRI for weird tingling. The only thing it showed was a miniscule possible unruptured aneurysm which the best neurosurgeon in my state said was probably a harmless vessel formation and sent me home.

The other day I went to a muscle specialist for trigger point pain, referred pain. He applied deep heat to my chest area and ultrasound to my shoulder and neck. Since then, I am actually feeling worse.

As I type this, my right hand is sore and tingly.

Could my previous symptoms have been fibro all along? And could the ultrasound and heat caused a flare up and made the fibro worse rather than better?

I am so anxious about all this.

Thanks,

Angela

Re: I think I have fibromyalgia...need input and advice

Hi Angela:

Welcome! I'm so glad you found this site and hope there is some good information for you. Some of what you describe could certainly be FMS. Anxiety is a double-edged sword in people with this condition. Part of it is from not knowing what is going on when the symptoms are so diverse and odd. Plus, the doctors are very slow at catching on. I do empathize. Anxiety/panic attacks is also part of having hypoglycemia, which is common in FMS patients. Diet can control a lot of the symptoms, if this is what is going on with you.

Have you gone to a rheumatologist? This type of physician seems to be the first course of action when FMS is suspected.

I've had a lot of different types of breast pain. The mammo's and such always come out negative for cancer, so I just let the worries go and not focus on this stuff. If your physician has thoroughly checked you out, and you do indeed have FMS, this might simply be the normal course of living with FMS. Educatation is your best ally. Do not be put off by ignorance and keep reading, studying, and standing up for yourself. This might mean a pursuit of different doctors until you find the ONE that is listening to YOU.

Blessings,
Kirstee

Unhappy Re: I think I have fibromyalgia...need input and advice (new questions)

I cannot find a rhuematologist in my area. I need to keep looking. I went to my MD and got bloodwork, waiting for it to come back. Got chest Xray for armpit pain/chest tightness and that was fine. I have been told that my symptoms are much like Lyme Disease. I am currently on Z-Pak of Zithromax for a swollen gland and possible Lyme. But then I read Lyme can also mimic fibromyalgia. I don't have a Lyme rash that I know of.

I don't want to keep shoveling meds down my throat if I don't really have Lyme. My doctor doesn't seem to think I have it, he didn't even test for it. He told me today it could be "severe anxiety."

Well, perhaps I have severe anxiety because I hurt all over. I have lost six pounds in a week and a half. Yes, I am very anxious. But...I do feel pain. My whole body hurts. It is a cross between what feels like inflammation, sore muscles, tingling, burning, aching, heaviness. I have located several very tender spots that hurt when I touch them. My arms, legs, back chest all hurt as well. I have burning pain running down the back of my right leg. My right and left arm and fingers burn and ache.

I am uninsured. I am starting to think that my current doctor will never consider fibro. I wonder if I can diagnose myself?

Do my symptoms sound like a fibro flare up? If only I had some answers I could take positive action.

Thanks,

Angela

Angela

As for fibro, you would have to go and see a rheumotologist for the answer to that.

I am more concerned about this lump under your arm. I think you should go back to your doctor and have that lump reassessed if it is still there.

Lumps are not suppose to be there, so go and get it checked out again.

As for Lyme disease, it might be better if your did a bit more research on that and see if you are a candidate for Lyme.

Whatever you have bee diagnosed previously with, you go back to the doctor and get that lump checked out.

Hi Angie:
Your symptoms are similar to what FMS patients experience. What city do you live in? I have a guide to FMS physicians and there may be a doctor listed that is located nearby.

Blessings,
Kirstee

Hi Angie77, It could be lyme. Please check out our posts under lyme to find out more about lyme and compare. Meds for Lyme are antibiotics and supplements. Take Care, Leb from the Lyme boards

Angela,
I have read some of your other postings and I am curious for an update. I am 26 and I have been going through a fibro diagnosis but I find it hard to swallow bc of the varying degree of my syptoms. I guess that it part of it but it just seems like too much to be all from Fibro.
My symptoms started from anxiety when I thought I had an ovarian cyst or cancer. Nothing there but I was a wreck for 2 weeks waiting. I developed AWFUL heartburn which was constant and I also had a lump in my throat for about 2 months. Had bairum swallow test and mri and ct of stomach. Everything fine, said I just had "mild reflux."...RIIIIGHT. Then it progressed to knee pain and groin pain. My lymph nodes have been swollen since but had ultrasound and bloodwork and they are normal. My ovary is still swollen also but it is fine. The pains progressed to my whole left leg and then my right too. Really bad to the point where I just had to sit and do nothing sometimes. I have 3 kids and a husband who comes and goes in the Navy so that was not easy!! Those have gone a away a little but my arms have gone numb at one point, skin tingles and burns different places at different times. My feet and hands started bothering me a month and a half ago to where they hurt so bad and I could hardly walk sometimes. My hands hurt really bad and burn, sometimes when I lay them flat (like they don't want to stretch) and sometimes just because. I had a garage sale today and I thought they were going to fall off bc it was really cold. I also have tension and migraine headaches with huge knots in my neck and back. I am really going insane. Could this possibly be all fibro?! My Dr. did bloodwork and all is well, or so he says. Def thinks it is fibro and has been very patient with me bc I go up there or call all the time. He has a very busy practice but ALWAYS makes time to see me or talk for 10 min on phone answering my questions even though he is so busy. He even tested me for lyme bc I asked him to. I am at my whitts end! I seem to read a lot of that one here. I responded to your post bc I read a lot of things we have in common and was hoping you, OR ANYONE could advise on the hand pain. It is very bothersom and is driving me crazy!!!!
Please will someone tell me it could all be firbo bc all the other tests came out okay. I know you are not Dr's but this has all taken it's tole on me and I have started to think I have some awful disease like Scleroderma even though doc says he doesn't think so.

I NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, Ashley
