well, a disease usually implies something "caught" or "gotten", like cancer, heart disease, and so forth. I see dis-ease, and though in most cases not fatal, MS, Lupus, Arthritis, and so on are considered "diseases". I would think if something as trivial as "gingivitis" is considered a disease, so too, is FM, in that it is not viral, contagious or infectious. It is chronic, longstanding and affects the central nervous system. I think the issue with it not being referred to as disease is because it is not "progressive". Or so they say. Just my .02

As I've read, Firbo is a syndrome. It is not, however, considered a disease. It doesn't matter what the experts say. It sucks. It's painful. It's misunderstood. I find the only ones who know anything are the ones that suffer. As it doesn't seem that we will escape this then we must learn to live with it. Even enjoy it. I know that's crazy but after I've changed my attitude towards it, usually using humor and possitive thinking, I find it's bearable.

Every time I used to go thru a flare,it hurt so bad I would go into tears. I found I was crying not because of the pain now, but that the pain would only go away just to come back. It was sad to think of this occuring again, and again. Now, I take it, but just this moment, I sing thru my pain (mumble really), and I keep the You Can't Beat Me thought, always. Be happy with it, however you can, be happy.

Rememeber pain is a Teacher.

Wink

A quote by Deepak Chopra, MD, author of Ageless Body Timeless mind:

"If you want to change your body, change your awareness first. Most basic bodily processes respond to our state of mind." Page 36.

Notice he said MOST bodily processes.

If it is a brain/function disorder such as the theory in which we lack certain proper neuron responses, low hormone output of special hormones, or lack of oxygen to a part of the brain, the best attitude possible won't help consitantly if the problem is purely physiological.

Until the correct theory and fix happens we won't be able to do much but keep ourselves hyped up with a good attitude and pray for each day to be a good one.

Fibro is a syndrome, a group of signs or symptoms that commonly occur TOGETHER and INDICATE a PARTICULAR DISEASE or CONDITION. I am thinking that the terms, condition, (a set of symptoms, or a state of being) and disease ( disorder, refers to the term fibromyalgia) and illness (referring to the disease, fibromyalgia.) can be used in reference to Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Myofascial Pain Syndrome depending on the way you are referring to it. The abbreviations FMS, CFS, MPS are all SYNDROMES. Kind of confusing but it makes sense to me.
Anyone can correct me if I am wrong in my thinking and explaination. Misty Misty

Hey Nicole,

Technically fibromyalgia is a disease by definition.. The definition of disease is:

1. A pathological (pathological is defined as any deviation from healthy or normal) condition of a part, organ, or system of an organism resulting from various causes, such as infection, genetic defect, or environmental stress, and characterized by an identifiable group of signs or symptoms.
2. A condition or tendency, as of society, regarded as abnormal and harmful.
3. Obsolete Lack of ease; trouble.

If crime can be considered a disease, then fibromyalgia certainly should be.. Unfortunately, until they pinpoint what causes the condition and identify the system which is targeted (backing it up with scientific & medical evidence rather than speculation and theory), it's likely doomed to be termed a disorder..

But whether they call it a disease, a disorder, a syndrome or a condition, it really won't make it any easier to live with..

Take Care,
Melanie
