Unhappy Pain

Hello,
I haven't been here for a while, but I can't sleep tonight....again because of so much pain, so here I am. I fell on a concrete floor a week ago today. It was the 3rd time I 've fallen since Christmas, and I keep hurting the same leg. I saw the Dr. on Friday. I've been having a lot of trouble with pain in the calves of my legs, right up next to the bend of my leg, and sometimes up in my thigh also. I'm getting really weary of dealing with the pain. I'm feeling awfully weepy. Can't seem to rest at night with the pain that of course gets worse at bedtime, and can't relax either. Dr. took me off Neurontin and put me on Gabitril. I can't decide if it's doing any good or not with all the pain in the leg that I hurt when I fell. I'm not very pain tolerant. I wimp out pretty fast. But, I sure could stand to feel better than this. kuntryhart

You're not a wimp hon. Pain can AND does take a toll on us. Besides, a little crying never hurts. I'm a crybaby. When i hurt so severly that, words cant or wont help anyone else understand what i'm going thru, I cry. It is a release for me, and my family knows already, that if they see me crying, they are NOT to bother me , or insist on me trying to tell them what is wrong. They know about the only time i cry , is when I am hurting so bad, that all i want to do is wash the pain away with the tears. They respect that and allow me to do it without making me feel guilty for reacting that way. So if youre feeling a bit weepy, go ahead hon and allow yourself a good cry. Then dry your eyes and know we are all sending you good thoughts and prayers your way. Pain is nothing to be ashamed of, and heck, arent we family here? so i dont mind telling others, im one big crybaby myself.
I hope your leg starts feeling better soon hon.
Love and hugs,
Jen

Hi
Have you been checked out for a fracture, degenerating joints, Fibromyalgia, arthritis?

There are so many possibles that your doctor may be over-looking. You just don't fall for no reason.

Please see an orthopedic specialist and get more detailed medical assistance.

Pain killers are used for specific reasons. Check out your needs and if you need a different type of med or treatment.

Good Luck

Question

Have you had CAT scans and MRI's done on your total spine? I have had right and or left leg collapsing due to stenoisis in my lower lumbar. It is so surprising when I almost fall, I usually have been able to stay upright. Also, Baclofen gives me spurotic leg weakness, but I use it sometimes.

You could have a pinched sciatic nerve. The MRI will show that.

One test for back problems is to stand upright and close your eyes. Try to raise one foot up and forward. If you loose your balance you could have back problems. (Be sure to be near a table or chair to catch yourself if you do loose your balance.) I cannot do this at all. I even get dizzy with my eyes closed.

Have you been checked for MS? Or brain lesions or tumors? I wouldn't let radiology inject dye into my blood stream for the brain scan because I am so allergic to stuff and many meds. Now I wish I had done that when it was ordered.
It sounds like you need a better pain medication. I have used Alozolpam when I felt hyper and have been restless. In a very small dose it has helped me. Some can easily get addicted to it. I am vey cautious with it though. The doctor tried to give me Buspar but I can't get past the dizzyness and nausea it causes for me. It helps with anxiety for many people.
Are you taking some kind of muscle relaxant and pain med together? Sometimes that will help. Let us know how you are doing. MistyMisty

Oh, I forgot to mention: since you have fallen three times since Christmas, I am wondering if you may have developed Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy? Does your leg or legs or injured area swell and turn a bit pink and is it warm to the touch? Is it real painful to walk? My ankle and leg and foot did that for 2 1/2 months after I fell and hurt my ankle/foot. The doctor was ready to put me in the hospital and try a new therapy: some kind of drug that needs to be injected intravenously. Now I can't remember the name of it....but you can find it on the web under Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy.
I think that the LDN drug I am on helped my immune system kick in because after forcing myself to bear weight and walk on my leg and foot it started to go down and the symptoms have now disappeared. Lucky me! I also saoked it in very warm water with ebsom (sp) salts every night for a month. Kind of hard for you to do that...unless you sit in a tub.
There is a message board about RSD also. Injuring the same area over and over can cause that but I am hoping you don't have that. I learned of RSD on this message board. It can be very painful! And don't believe it when they say there is no cure. I had to show my doctor the print out of the drug that can be used to get rid of it. And he was willing to give it try if necessary. This is just an idea. Best wishes, MistyMisty
