problem walking

i have had fm for 20+ yrs now, also, degenerative joints and spine....copd....diabetes. i've already had 2 knees and a hip replaced.
the problem now is swaying or losing balnce several times a day. i got sent to a neurologist, had x-rays, bone scan, 2 mri's and nerve test done on my legs. he wanted to rule out ms which he did. my ortho, rhemo, and neuro, are all saying it is fm related.
does anyone else have this problem? i am only 57 and hate to use a cane when i go out, but dr's told me not to take any chances. thanks for any input you can give.......best to all with this awful, painful disease...bevann

Re: problem walking

hi bevann, I am your age with FM. Many of us have problems with walking, balance, etc. ....tipping over....bumping into things.....tripping over things that are or are not there, lol. However, it is good that you are getting all other things ruled out.

Re: problem walking

HI Bevan,
I too have problems with degenerative Joint disease and osteporosis and a vit. D deficiency, and a host of other problems that I never knew might be directly related to just being diagnosed with having FM.
I did find out that people with FM do get vit. D deficiency which I never knew was related either. i just read it in a fibro pamplet that was sent to me thru the mail. I was shocked and am shocked that maybe all my bone and joint problems are all related to the FM.
I'm new at this and just learning about it and find this site is very helpful in teaching me things and I'm also finding out that alot of other people out there suffer with the same symptoms I am.
I thought I was losing my mind before i received an actual diagnosis. I was wondering why so many things were happening to me medical wise at the age of 47 yrs old. I was wondering how could i possibly have full blown osteoporosis PLUS degenerative joint disease in my spine, neck and other joints on my body. the rate that it's increasing by striking other joints, such as my hip is something I never knew could happen.
I never had hip pain till two months ago and it came on suddenly. before i was dx'd with FM.
my rheumy dr told me "yes" the arthritis CAN can progress at a fast rate. It hurts in my left hip, the back area when I walk. It feels as if it might give out at any given moment at times.

your hip replacement and knee replacment didn't help you at all?

I'm curious as to what they're going to do for you at this point?

I wish you well and pray that things dont' get any worst than they can get for you. I hope you find a dr that can help you.

sincerely,
linda

Re: problem walking

hi bevann,
yesterday was a true fibro stagger day. i never use a walking stick or cane. they cause other problems in my body due to the alteration of balance required to "lean" on a cane. i used one in the beginning and started having other problems. back, arm, hips, hands.
the best advise i can offer is let it happen when it happens and don't try to stop it. of course regain your balance if you know that you will not actually fall. but if you are gonna fall relax into it. with your bionic knees and hip you are stronger.
i have a bunch of stuff that's eating my joints. my knees are their fav! right hip second fav. are you pleased with your bionic parts?
fibro is trippy. i have this warped outlook. i trip on the multiple ways it manifests and almost stand aside and watch my body do and feel so many odd sensations. it facinates me. yea, i know, weird!! that's me. curious and weird.
peace,
bluelakelady

I experienced similar when I used a cane for a bit so I try not to use it now. On the side I was using it I developed pain in the shoulders, arm, etc. Maybe I was putting too much weight on it that caused that (?). The doctor never recommended it so there was never instruction about it. I just bought it to help me mostly with keeping balance and stability while transitioning from sitting to standing position. I have used it periods of several months at the time, but keep trying to do without it. It is a really useful support to me when my low back is so bad that I have trouble standing up and I need something to lean on...usually an arm of the chair, couch, etc. but sometimes when out and about at doctor's offices where there are armless chairs it is a bit of extra strain on the low back where that alone can start to trigger to spasms and flare. When the low back is showing signs of weakness is when I return to using it to avoid things being made worse. All of which would be improved with exercise, but my fatigue level won't allow that. I am hoping things will soon get stabilized enough for me where my body will tolerate some exercise as it is a huge key to managing FM, but a very delicate balance....more for some than others. So important to find that just right balance for your own body and begin the harmony dance with increasing levels to achieve improvement, but without triggering flare setbacks.
