Trigger Point Injections, Anyone? - Fibromyalgia Message Board

I am going to my doctor today because he suggested that I should try a few injections in my back. I have several knots or painful lumps in my back, about 10 of them. At first he thought it was just benign limpoma but after feeling around he said those were inflammed trigger points. He wanted to do them then, but I chickened out! But now I have changed my mind. I am hoping it will give me some kind of relief. Has anyone had these and what is the succuess rate and how long does it last and how painful is it afterwards? I also showed him my left knuckle of my index finger and he said that the joint was pretty swollen-no trauma and it has been this way for over a month, so he is re-running my blood work to check for rheumatoid or lupus. Is it common to get these illnesses when you hav fibro?

Ouch! Sounds so painful - I can truly empathize with your pain. I have had the trigger point injections that you are referring to. My pain clinic doctor combined the trigger point injections with botox injections to help muscles rest. The combined therapy was helpful. The needles the doctor used were very fine and weren't so bad. He also sprayed a little "ouch no more" on the site before he injected the stuff. Do not be fearful of having injections in odd sites because the pain you suffer with FMS is much more painful than the temporary sting of an injection.

I have trigger point injections on a regular basis. You get used to the pain of the injections, it only lasts a few seconds. And the relief you receive is amazing. If you leave your CMP untreated, you will develop chains of trigger points down your body, I did. Since I have CMP, it will never completely go away as per my pain mgmt doc.

I had the trigger point injections in my neckand knee and there was no pain involved at all, after having them I went shopping. It did help a lot, but only lasted about 3 weeks. I am now going to have a cortisone injection.
