Men With Fibromyalgia? - Fibromyalgia Message Board

Over the course of the last two years, I have been suffering on and off from various symptoms such as intense pain, tingling, insomnia, anxiety, fatigue etc. There have been good days and bad days. Recently, I dound out that several years ago my mom was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, but she didn't say anything. A few days ago, I was commenting on these symptoms to her and she suggested that I may have fibromyalgia. From what I have read, the symptoms fit, but it primarily affects women. I am a 34-year-old male. I am a little confused by this, so I thought that I would see what input other people may have.

Fibromyalgia is more common in women, but men can have it too. Start now finding a good doctor to begin the process of elimination in determining if you do indeed have this. The first step I would guess is to get an appointment with the doc who is treating your mom. Yes, it does run in families, and the doctors who are most likely to treat Fibro will be Rhuemetologists.(sp) Ask your mother how she deals with it, someone this close to you can be a godsend of information and support.

Men also can be afflicted with FMS. The ratio is much lower than women for some reason, and the general thinking on this is that female hormones may be involved in this ratio. My FMS physician is a male and also has the condition.

I second the advice to try to get an appointment with your mom's doctor. Especially if she likes him.

FM isn't as common in men, but it does happen. My uncle has it. And it is most definitely hereditary, so chances are there are other people in your family who also have it.
