help, what's going on?

I have had FM for nearly four years. The last few months I have been in the most godawful flare. Extreme pain, fatigue, the whole kit and kaboodle. During this flare I have started getting extreme pain in the inner corner of my right eye, like a needle being poked in it. It lasts maybe 30 seconds, then goes away but happens at least once a day, up to four times a day, and only in my right eye. I get pain that runs from the inner corner down around the eye socket on my cheek too. Hurts to wear my glasses. I also have been getting terrible headaches that last for days. It goes away if I take 1000mg of acetominophen but returns when it wears off. I may have one or two days a week headache-free. Sometimes I get the headache after the eye pain and sometimes I have both occuring separately. I am on 30 mg of cymbalta which cannot be increased because I could not tolerate it, 225 mg of lyrica, 30 mg of flexeril, levbid and miralax for IBS, and percocet for when the fm pain is really bad (does not help the eye pain or headache). My doctor referred me to a rheumy who called me and said he doesn't treat fm anymore. There are no local rheumys and the nearest ones are in Wyoming and Colorado, out of my insurance network. So my question is, what the heck is going on with my eye? I know I should see an opthamologist, but until I can get in, does anyone have any thoughts and ideas about what I can do in the meantime for relief?

Thanks for your help.

Re: help, what's going on?

Kathy, welcome! My primary doctor does osteomanipulation on my head and face, I am not sure that would help, but I get migraines behind my left eyeball, about 4-5 days out of the week. I also have what you have with the pain medications wearing off and the pain coming back. Since the pain medications does not help have you considered that maybe it is a migraine? I have to take maxalt for when my migraines act up in my left eye.

Do you have a primary doctor? Can you get in an talk about the pain soon? Also I saw that you take flexeril and do you take the 30 mg all at once? Is it possible that you could take your percocet, 4 advil,10 mg flexeril (for if it muscle spasms), and then maybe drink a cup of tea or coffee. I can not live with out my Maxalt, and I have noticed that if I am out of maxalt, I try the flexerill and my pain medication and sometimes that helps. I also have tmj and that causes some of my migraines and my face pain.

Also, it is possible you might have Myofacsial pain syndrome? That can cause a lot of pain in your face. I was dx that from an oral surgeon.

I wish I could help you more, but I think you need to find an osteomanipulation doctor who can help you with the pain. They have an DO after there name, and it had helped me.

Re: help, what's going on?

Kassandra, yes, I have a primary doctor. He is the one who referred me to the rheumy because all treatments seem to be going nowhere. I haven't gotten in to see him since the cancellation of the rheumy appointment (they called about 4:30 pm, nice, huh?). I take the flexeril 3 times a day. I have had migraines and this is totally different, unless it is a new form of migraine. The pain isn't behind or above my eye, it's in the very inner corner. Headache is all over my head, focusing across my forehead. I take the acetominophen and a flexeril with my morning coffee and it is no help. But thanks for the suggestion. Can myofascial pain be in only one small area on my cheek? I have heard about it but I thought it affected the body. I am not very familiar with it so forgive my ignorance.
Charlene, I haven't tried moist heat, cold doesn't help but I do it out of habit with migraines. The book sounds interesting, I will look into that.

Thanks to you both for the advice!
Kathy

Re: help, what's going on?

Hello kathy4399,

I have the migrains and sometimes the needle in the eyes. (Yes, I get them in both eyes.) Whenever, I have this my Physio works on me to releve the pain. He calles what he does "Strain against strain". He works the back of my neck. When he does this method it feels soooooooo good. When he is done he puts heat on my neck. It's relaxes everything and the strain on my eyes are gone. Whenever I get that I can't get rid of it until I go see him. It's no fun when you wake up on a Saturday and have to wait for Monday. I am allergic to anti-infammatory. This is why I go to my Physio every day of the week. I am so bad that my Dr. prescribed me for 5 days a week. Believe me when I go 3 days without physio (holidays) I end up walking with a special cane and it will take a little while before I walk freely. I've had a flare up for about two months now.

Sorry I kidda got off track. Maybe if your insurance covers Physio's maybe this may help.

I hope that you will get help soon. Because I know how much this hurts.

Take care,
M
