What type of Doctor should I go to?

Hello everyone, My primary Doctor diagnosed me with Fibromyalgia but I feel like she doesn't know that much about it, does anyone know if there is any type of doctor who would be able to give me more info? Thanks!

Re: What type of Doctor should I go to?

Moetwins - welcome!!

I would go to a rheumatologist. Only a rheumatologist can rule out other auto immune diseases that could also cause some of the symptoms of fibro. My PCP thought that I probably had fibro too, but she needed me to see a rheumatologist for a definite diagnosis.

Good luck, and you have found a great place! Anyone here can help you with any question or concern you may have. Maybe you might even be able to give some advice to us!!

Re: What type of Doctor should I go to?

Find a Rheumatologist that specializes in Fibromyalgia. I had one that said it WASN'T real and it was "all in my head" and that really angered me. For years doctors just denied my symptoms and would tell me to see a Phychiatrist. At time I began to think maybe I was CRAZY. Not that I am not a bit though these doctors started making me think that! I also ended up finding out I have Streptococcal Arthritis along with some other things. Thank god I found a GREAT doctor who is very intelligent. She is a Doctor and has a PhD as well.

Re: What type of Doctor should I go to?

A rheumatologist would be a good doc to see, but as stated you have to get one who treats fibro. My PCP treats my fibro, she is a family doc but is an Osteopath. Sometimes D.O.'s have a different way of looking at things and are not afraid of alternative ways to treat the whole body. Good Luck, keep us posted.

Re: What type of Doctor should I go to?

A rheumatologist or an internist is what you need. Finding one won't be easy though. It's about half and half between those who believe FM is real and those who think its all in our heads. The important part is NOT what specialty the doctor is, but that they are experienced in treating it.

If your PCP was able to diagnose you, then she's at least familiar with it. Be upfront and honest with her about how you feel and ask her if there's anyone in your area that is good at treating FM and if you should see them. There is NO rule out there that says FM patients have to be treated by a rheumatologist.

Rheumatology is actually a sub-specialty of internal medicine. I'm treated by an internist and he knows way more about FM than the one rheumy in town who believes it's real. In fact, in my town you're more likely to get a PCP who will treat you than you're likely to get an appointment with the one rheumy.
