Nocturnal muscle spasms in legs - Fibromyalgia Message Board

Hello, everyone,

For the past few nights, I've been awakened by pain my calf muscles. My foot goes into a contortion and gets frozen there. The pain is almost unbearable. I looked at my calves, the muscles under the skin were twiching back and sorth. I thought I'd have to go to the ER.
I couldn't even walk because I couldn't straighten out my foot.

Has anyone had this happen? I almost don't want to lie down for fear it will happen again. Any suggestions as to how to handle it? I did start taking magnesium again, and took a muscle relaxant, but I hate to take those because of side effects.

I do get a daily walk and follow a decent diet.

I'd welcome any advice here, thanks,

Oh, Man, I hate those!

Best I can tell you is definitely use the magnesium, and some calcium to go with it. Try gently rubbing or stretching the muscles before bedtime, whichever seems like a better way to ease it.

I get those too once in a while... just had one like 3 nights ago. They will wake you out of a dead sleep and leave you begging for mercy. But this is nothing new to me ... I got those a lot growing up too so I can't really blame it on what is ailing me now.

I get muscle cramps in my calves and thighs (and toes) at night. I'm going to tell you what helps me and I'm going to sound crazy. Keep a bar of soap next to your bed and if you get a muscle cramp hold the dry bar of soap on the muscle. It works. I have no idea why it works.

YES!!!

I went to a naturopath who put me on a calcium/magnesium powdered drink at night. I was also extremely Vitamin D deficient. (low vit. d affects calcium absorption).

Even a western doctor should be able to help you with this. (but go to a naturopath if you can!)
