I was just diagnosed with fibromyalgia yesterday and I have a lot of emotions and confusion going on about how to accept this and learn to live with it.
I am in so much pain from it that I have not been able to work for the last 6 months. My goal is to get physcially well enough to return to the workforce.
The doctor told me that exercise is very important. My question is what kinds of exercises are most benefical to people who have this diagnosis? I spent 3 months in PT for my back issue and it did nothing but made my fibromyalgia symptoms worse.
I guess what I am asking is does anyone have any advice about living and dealing with fibromyalgia?
My mind is spinning from thinking about this and how it will effect the rest of my life. I also have DDD and am Bi Polar 2.
I opted not to take cymbalta as I am currently on an anti-depressant for my bi-polar and I also opted not to take Lyrica due to its multiple side effects.
I am presently on the fentanyl patch 50ml for my back pain. This patch in my opinion does not help my fibromyalgia symptoms at all.
I walk on the trendmill. I also do some streching before the trendmill. If it is nice outside I will go for a walk outside but, I would avoid the hills. Hills tend to hurt my back really bad that I can't move the next day.
The only advice I could give you is to listen to your body. With any exercise.
Leanna, If you have access, walking around, and/or stretching in a warm pool helps. It would have to be a pool where they do Phy Therapy because it's warm enough. 86 degrees I think, any less and it tends to hurt your body.
Fibro is pretty crappy to have. Sorry about you diagnosis. We are here for you if you want to chat.

leanna, My primary md said I had polymyalgia rheumatica but my rheumatologist said I was too young and said I have fibromyalgia. She is convinced it is related to not getting restorative sleep d/t sleep apnea. She thinks my pain will be greatly improved if I use my cpap machine. Prednisone is the only thing that truly helps me. I am using large doses of motrin because my md doesn't want me on longterm steroid use. Good luck to you. I hope you find relief. jjsm.
hi leanna, sorry to hear you're in so much pain. I was dx'd with polymyalgia rheumatica by my primary md over 2 years ago but my rheumatologist said I'm too young. She said I have fibromyalgia. She is convinced it is related to not getting restorative sleep d/t sleep apnea. She thinks if I use my cpap machine regularly it will greatly decrease my pain. I'm not convinced. The only thing that really helps me is prednisone but my md doesn't want me on that longterm. I have been taking large doses of motrin which can also be damaging but if I don't I can hardly walk. Good luck to you. jjsm
Thank you for your replies. How long does it take for someone to accept this new diagnosis? I was only diagnosed on Monday and it is like my friends and family do not want to hear about the pain anymore.
I am hurt and angry about their reaction and to be franked pretty mad about the entire situation.
How do you find people who understand and can show some compassion about your situation?
I hope that I can find the above things here as I desperately need some support and encouragement right now. I want to learn to live with this in a positive manner.
