Neurontin question - Fibromyalgia Message Board

Hi,

I have finally come to a point where I need to be on something for pain. I hate medications and only want to take them if I absolutely have too. I've decided that if I'm going to try and start to work out again to lose all this weight I put on, I would have to try Lyrica.

Well, I went to my Rheumy and told him I was ready to try something. He gave me one months worth of Gabapentin. I thought that was Lyrica until I looked it up on the internet. It's really Neurontin. I'm familiar with the name because I've seen several posts with this drug mentioned.

My doc wants me to just try one months worth and come back and talk to him about how it works for me. He said it would be a few weeks before I noticed any improvement with pain. I've taken it for five days now and I feel woozy and a touch nauseous. I'm willing to put up with this in hopes I will have a good response in a few weeks.

Can you tell me how it works for you, how long you've taken it, etc. What's the difference between it and Lyrica? They both sound like they do the same thing and they both have the same "pleasant" side affects. Yeah, I can't wait to gain some more weight and be more tired too. hee hee

I take neurontin for the burning sensation on areas of my skin i have occasionally; I used to have it alot. At the beginning, I couldn't drive while on this medication.

Both drugs are just about the same. I don't like either one of them. The side effects are the same as the ones you are trying to get rid of. It was like that for me and a whole lot of people. Another thing is that the dosage keeps having to go up often.

I prefer to have nerve blocks and ablations, then I don't really have to hurt from pain caused by nerves. Ablations kill off nerves and I'd rather feel that than take the lyrica and neurontin. It's not that bad, or at least it hasn't been for me anyway.

I prefer pain management docs, they aren't limited to 1 certain kind of thing. Good luck.

try taking it with food. i only take it at bedtime with my other meds so i don't know if it makes me woozy or the other meds do or they do it all together. i have been on neurontin for about 8 years. i know it makes a difference in my pain because i quit taking it for a month just to see what happened and if i really was being helped by it. what happened was pain and my legs were in constant motion.
have patience. it takes time to find the right balance for your body.
