How To Find A Fibro Doctor? - Fibromyalgia Message Board

How does one find a doctor who knows what the heck Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is?

I had a rheumatologist diagnose the fibro but once he put a name to the pain I've been suffering he passed me back to the family doctor. The thing is, both that GP doctor and the one I'm currently seeing doesn't seem to be very sympathetic to the condition.

He knows I suffer from Fibro and had only suggested I take Tylenol #1 and Advil for the pain. That was until I had my physical and I was sitting in the waiting room crying from the pain of a very bad flare-up. When he checked my blood pressure and put his hand on my wrist to check my pulse I cried out "please don't touch me!". Finally ..... after over 40 years of suffering I finally got a prescription for pain medication.

I think I need to find a doctor who is knowledgeable and sympathetic to Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Any idea what I need to ask before I commit myself to a new doctor?

Please keep exploring the doctors in your area. I believe there are various support groups in Canada. Check with your local hospital since they may have information about support groups or FMS physicians in your area. Support groups may have all the "FMS" gems and can refer you to someone who knows how to treat the condition.

Make up a list of symptoms before you visit the doctor. Ask the doc how he plans to relieve the pain and help you accomplish a better quality of life based on those symptoms. Do research and be knowledgeable so you can be on top of the situation before you even step into the door of the doc's office. I have had my fair share of dismissals and misunderstandings with the medical profession. The best thing I ever did was actually keep going until I found my "prince." Took awhile, but was well worth the effort.

Kristee, thank you ever so much. I really appreciate all the information you have given me. I'll explore each of the Canadian contacts you've given me. At least now I have direction. I think the Fibro Fog was preventing me from figuring out how or where to begin. You've helped me so much, now I can begin my search.

I go to rehabilitation specialists. They prescribe my meds and have put me through physical therapy. I was on a disability for 2 months and they got me back to work!
