Unhappy fibro and surgery ?????

Hi everyone hope your Easter was as painfree as possible. I have a question, I have nodules on my thyroid and the new endo doctor I seen said I need to have surgery. My fibromyalgia has been in a flair for months now. I am very stressed about having surgery, are there any special things, that any one knows is helpful for this. I work full time so I will have to take off work for the surgery and that is stress plus my pain has been very bad lately even before I new surgery was going to be needed. I really could use some advice please!!!!!
thank u
Sue

Re: fibro and surgery ?????

You may have alot of different replies on your questions but i will give you my opinion since you are asking.
Please be sure to let the surgeon and endo doctor know all about your fibro flares and all medications you are taking. Alot or shall i say some doctors simply don't have a clue to what fibro or a fibro flare is.
i was referred to a specialists for a procedure that for me has totally changed my life.
The specialists simply did not pay much attention to the medications i'm prescribed to and during the procedure my body paralyzed but my mind was well aware of all taking place. To say the least, i should not have been given the IV meds anestiologists gave. i still have nightmares.
So please discuss your fibro and medications in great depth with whomever is performing this surgery.
No one should ever be put through what i had to go through. Ask your doctor as many questions as you can and explain how your fibromyalgia affects your every day life so maybe they can begin to understand.
Wish you well

Re: fibro and surgery ?????

hi sue,
i have had a few surgeries since being gifted with fibro. it's a crapshoot as to how you will feel. i went for one surgery during a flare and the flare ended post op. another time nothing happened, i just healed. only one time did i flare post op. it was hard but it ended in about a month.
the only thing my docs had to do was use more med to knock me out and i did take the stronger pain meds for a bit.
for myself i find if i prepare myself for the invasion of my tissue by doing deep breathing and talking to my body about what is coming i do better. i focus on my body and watch the needles go in when the i.v. is started. if i can see it i have no fear of it. no fear means less stress. less stress means less pain from fibro.
fibro loves stress. it gobbles it up and then vomits out pain, your pain. i don't like pain so i starve my fibro all the time.
anything you can do to reduce stress is critical in preparation for this. work is work and you will find a way to make ends meet while off. know you have it within you to do this.
sending energy and peace,
bluelakelady

Re: fibro and surgery ?????

I know that this is going to sound a bit off the wall, but when I have had procedures or surgery my fibro pain diminishes. I think it's due to the anesthetic totally relaxing me. I tell the doctors this all the time. I told the pain specialist that I wished I could get put into a twilight sleep a couple of times a week. I get really deep trigger points and this helps for about 3 days, not totally pain free, but a good share of it.
