Back & Chest Muscles Ache Terribly, Is this Fibro?

Hi, tonight I got to thinking that there could be a possibility that the severe ache in my chest and back (muscles) could be fibromyalgia.

Can you have fibro in the upper torso only? My legs really aren't affected.

How do doctors diagnose fibro in the first place?

All I know is that I hurt on my chest and back and it feels like aching muscles along with (at times) tingling nerve pain when my clothing hits my shoulders and back. Sometimes the pain is tolerable and others (like now) it's very strong. When I move the pain gets worse, but even when I'm still I can feel the pain and ache.

Anyone?

A rheumotologist is the best person to diagnose you - you need to have had pain for at least 3 months in all 4 areas of your body - they test by pressing 18 tender points all over your body and you need to have pain in at least 11 of them. Mine was predominantly my upper body and some in hips and tops of legs - however when they pressed some of the tender points eg in knees I said I don't have pain there before he pressed - when he pressed I went through the roof - I get pain everywhere now....not sure how long you have had the pain for? Reading through many of these posts will help you understand fibro more and getting a referral to a rheumotolgist will be a good step forward if you think you do hae it - it could also be a muscle/disc problem

Re: Back & Chest Muscles Ache Terribly, Is this Fibro?

I would be more tempted to guess chronic muscle strain in your back especially from pain with movement, and chest pain can refer from the back pain.

However you can have a heart issue causing chest pain referring pain into your back.

Have you had an MRI on the back pain? Any treatment?

Fibromyalgia does not have to be diagnosed by tender points. It can be diagnosed also by excluding all other conditions and based on the symptoms you have. Well a rhematologist would argue with diagnosing it that way but primary care doctors do dx it like that.

I do not suffer leg pain either and I have been diagnosed with FMS.

Re: Back & Chest Muscles Ache Terribly, Is this Fibro?

I was diagnosed with fibro after going to the ER with tightness in my chest. It felt like someone had a hand on my chest keeping it from expanding. Right before that symptom I had very tender spots under my arms and in my upper back. I have not had the chest pressure since but I am sure it was from the fibro. But you should ALWAYS get that sort of thing checked out. I actually was afraid it was my heart when I went to the ER.
