Question on weight and meds.....

I have Fibromyalgia and have been put on Medrol, Prednisone, Cyclobenzaprine, Lyrica, Daypro, Cymbalta, Savella, Wellbutrin, Fluoxetine and Amitriptyline. These were used to help "deal" with the fibromyalgia symptoms but the side effects have done more damage then good. I have gained 40 pounds, can not walk more then 20 feet now without getting short of breath. I was a very healthy person. I snore now. Loudly. This may not be a big deal to many but I wake up gasping for breath now. I have an appointment and I am telling my dr I am going to stop taking them. I have only had minor relief if any from the meds if any, some have caused major side effects. My question is to those who have taken these medicines and have gained weight and stopped taken them, how long did it take for the meds to come off? Did you have to work at it or did it just come off the same way it came on?? (yea, wouldn't THAT be nice!?!)
Thanks for your input!!

Re: Question on weight and meds.....

ask your doctor about a diuretic to help with the retention of fluids those drugs can cause. be sure you wean off gently with your docs help as to a time table. these are drugs that have to leave as gently as they hopefully were introduced to your body.
i have lost over 50 pounds. i was exercising and walking and mostly just eating healthy. now i face the other end. lost too much weight. down to 114 last night. i am 5'5" tall.
i wish you an easy return to yourself.
peace,

Re: Question on weight and meds.....

can you send some of your "winter blubber" to me for my fanny? too funny. no doubt once you are active again you will start shrinking back to your happy size. are your hands, face or feet puffy at all?
enjoy the day whatever you do. it all counts.

Re: Question on weight and meds.....

Yikes...I think I would find a different doctor! Of all those drugs the one you need to be most careful with coming off of is Prednisone...that needs to be decreased slowly. I have had Fibro for more than 15 years and i haven't found any of those drugs effective and they all have a tendency for weight gain. None of the drugs they claim that are suppose to help with pain have not helped me but I surely would question any doctor that put me on so many drugs all at the same time. I am on only one medicine and that is a pain med and that just takes the edge off but it isn't any that you are on. Since everyone is different in weight loss no one can say for sure how long it will take to come back off but I can tell you that once you are off all those drugs you will feel a whole lot better and at least you won't put any weight back on! Good luck.

Re: Question on weight and meds.....

I guess I need to clarify.... These are all the meds I have been on over the past 2 1/2 years. currently I am only on the Cyclobenzaprine, Fluoxetine and Amitriptyline. I've been on the Cyclo consentenctly since the beginning and the other two just since January but they have added 10 plus pounds alone.
my hands aren't puffy but my feet are getting there and I don't even recognize my face anymore. I tried some close on the other day at a store, due to my horror that last years summer close don't fit, and I was terrified by what was starring back at me in the full length dressing room mirror. I never knew a body could be shaped in such a way.....It is just so sad that the thing the doctor gives you to help you function better ends up taking you out of work permenantly and destroys your body in the process....well I am sick of it! I am taking my life back!!!!! I will deal with the pain I had before. Cuase what I am dealing with now isn't worth much.....

Re: Question on weight and meds.....

chamomile tea will help as a diuretic for puffyness. talk to your doc about it. there are scripted meds. fluid retention is not good.
i quite agree with you on the fallout of "helpful" drugs. never forget tho that this is your body and only you decide what goes into it. not a doctor. i am glad you are taking back your life. sending energy for the journey back to self.
peace,
bluelakelady

Re: Question on weight and meds.....

I'm sorry to hear nothing is working for you. I tried all the drugs that were supposed to help and got no relief until I went to a pain specialist and started on hydromorphone.

I was in so much pain, the worst being my lower back after a know everything Chiropractor adjusted my back so I would be fixed right up. No such thing as Fibromyalgia.

After that I started really researching and never let anyone do anything to me or give me a med I didn't know alot about.

The saddest part is my back never bothered me much until that day, it never got any better after I couldn't sit or lay down for more than 1/2 an hour and standing was only about 5 mins. Needless to say I became very depressed and totally miserable.

After getting help with the pain, it isn't totally gone but so much better, I was able to get more exercise and gradually lost the weight I had gained on the other meds.

Sorry for rambling. I worked my way up to 24 mgs of hydromorphone and got a good part of my life back. I have been taking this for about a year and have had no side effects other than constipation.

I'm so glad I found a knowledgable doctor who finally helped me after many years of horriblee pain and no life what so ever.

Re: Question on weight and meds.....

Well I haven't got to go in for another appointment yet, but I did get my labs back from my last one... my cholesterol levels rose... Keep in mind I don't consider my self that much over weight right now...just a bit chubby. ok. I am putting most of the blame on the anti depressants and the effects it has had on my body as I have been in a constant state of a zombie.... so in spetember my level was I think 143 this time it was 250, but my tri(whatevers) were in the 500 hundreds!!!!! I think I should be half dead with those numbers!!!! I think that explains alot!! Being short of breath, not able to walk more then 20 feet, snoring and waking up coughing (cause I can't breathe).... these sound like signs of someone who should be extremely obese, right???? I'm 5'3" and was 146 at my last appt (but normally am 110ish) so since I haven't been able to get in & my dr was on "spring break" I took my health in to my own hands...dangerous I know but I was already having a quivering heart when I exerted myself too much....so I stopped my generic prozac and elavil. the first few days I had a terrible terrible headache, I assume from the withdrawl. But after day 4 I started feeling fine. It has been 9 days and I have LOST almost 10 pounds and I am alert. I actually don't feel depressed...imagine that....

So I just wanted to share that with you all.

We'll see how it goes from here....

Re: Question on weight and meds.....

perhaps you are like me and anti-ds make you depressed? so glad you are feeling more like you and not the zombie woman. i think your body has given you your answer. now just tell the doc when you do go.
tho it is not easy one can find a way to live with pain. i have had to. it's not so bad when the fear is removed from the experience of pain. i no longer fear the days of pain.
cartwheels of joy on the scale going down!!!
peace,
blue
