Mouth Pain

I am at my wits end. For the past few years I have had pain mostly above this impacted wisdom tooth that comes and goes. Lately the pain has gotten worse and with more frequency. Not only that but it now goes thru my entire mouth, the gums, teeth and tongue and lips. I have gone to my dentist and he says he sees nothing. He referred me to an oral surgeon and he says the pain I am experiencing is not from the impacted tooth. He will not touch the impacted tooth because it is laying on my facial nerve and there is a chance of becoming paralyed on that side of my face if it.When I get a flair up it feels like burning especially the gum over the impacted wisdom tooth and my teeth ache. I thought one my teeth had a hairline fracture. But the dentist said we can not see that and you would have to wait for it to crack in order to be sure. I have seen 3 surgeons in the past and all have told me the same thing. Dont touch the wisdom tooth. This dentist that I am seeing now says it definitely could be the fibro. He has other Fibro patients. Anyone going thru this.So frustrating and in some much agony when it flairs up.

Re: Mouth Pain

I get mouth & jaw pain. It feels like I have been clenching my jaw too much. It get really painful--I have read that this is another part of fibro pain. I try to relax my mouth & jax, massage it but usually have to just ride out thepain.

Yes what you are talking about is TMJ (tempral mandibular joint). I have that ontop of all the things I stated. What you can do is wear a mouth guard made by the dentist to stop you from clenching your teeth. It really works.

Re: Mouth Pain

I was at my wits ends with jaw, tooth and face pain too recently and decided to pull out all the stops. I started getting massage therapy, and the therapist (who practices reiki) did a good deal of work on my face and jaws; I started taking tylenol one (with a bit of codeine); I started sleeping with a heating pad on low around my face and/or jaws; I ate only soft food, nothing crunchy, nothing chewy. I am not a jaw clencher, even in my sleep. My doctor had also introduced two new meds to my 'personal pharmacy' during the past 2 months: Lyrica and Cesamet. Something turned the bend last week; after more than a year with this pain spreading and getting worse and worse, I woke up last Wednesday and it was nearly gone - poof gone overnight. No intensity of pain at any rate. I have a little tenderness in the jaw joints, and a little tenderness in my chin-below where there is a tooth that I was sure needed to be root canalled -that doesn't hurt any more either. My ears are a little sore-so I won't put my iPod ear buds in them anymore-I already bought new soft headphones and I don't listen to it on high volume anymore. The changes I've made in my life because of this pain in the past year have been very consuming.

I'm going out for dinner tonight and ordering a steak, and a big crunchy salad. And I just might not take my meds tonight so that I can have some wine too.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Re: Mouth Pain

What do you think made your burning gums etc. better? I have many of your symptoms...have had them for a year now. It began with a burning feeling around a capped tooth. In the follwing months it turned into an almost constant problem. Used to wake up pain free, but by noon the gums, tongue, lips etc would be burning. One of my doctors prescibed Lyrica, but my insurance wouldn't cover it, so I'm taking Gabepentin, which doesn't do much to ease the burning. I had a 23 hour period when my pain went away..Easter Sunday...but it came back. I really need help, but all the doctors and dentists I've been to just shrug and prescibe more drugs to ease the pain...not find the cause.

Hawkins do I understand that you have fibromyalgia with this pain? If you have FM it is possible that the pain can come and go. This is what I am experiencing. I could be fine for a month and then wham it acts up in my mouth. With the FM pain can start anywhere in your body for no reason, no explanation. That is why that doctors can not help for theu are helpless themselves when it comes to this horrible disease. So tired of going from doc to doc. I woke up one day with severe pain in my hand. Went to hand specialist because doc thought it was carpul tunnel. He said that it wasnt. Pain went away completely and then 4 months later started again. My physiatrict (pain doc) swears to me it is carpal tunnel But I am not sure. I just chock it up to the FM. For now have to live with it till maybe one day they will find out what this is from. I think I have neurological issues but have been to 5 neurologist and no one can or is willing to help me. My husband left me because of this and I am so lonely. Trying to date again but am afraid because when it comes to having a sexual relationship dont know if I can. See FM affects me there to. Burning and nerve pain when having sex for past 4 years. That is why he left me. No sex.

Re: Mouth Pain

No, I haven't been diagnosed with FM, but it's been mentioned. To date, the only pain is in my mouth. That's why I'm exploring the allergy avenue - I've explored all other options. Today I started on Xanax - somebody said it helped their burning mouth. We'll see. I am currently taking about 4 Gabepentin for this problem.

Re: Mouth Pain

Burning in the mouth, tongue, gums can be from a vitamin B12 deficiency. A co-worker had this problem recently & onceshe got a B12 shot, she started feeling better..

Re: Mouth Pain

Sorry to hear that your husband left you because of your illness. Men can be jerks...and show no compassion at best. Mine doesn't want to know about my pain, so most of the time I don't mention it. Meanwhile, I've been to countless doctors and dentists trying to find a cure. At this point, I just want to control the pain. I've had two good days using a gabepentin 3 X a day and Xanax .25MG twice a day. Don't know if it's a fluke or is really working, but Monday I need to convince my doctor to prescribe me some Xanax, as we're about ready to leave on a 5 month RV trip. Last summer we had to cut it short because of my mouth...thought I'd come home and get it taken care of one way or another in 7 months. My dear hubby was not happy to say the least. NOT. It is no better than when we got back. Mine is confined to my mouth and I guess it's what they call Burning Mouth Sydrom (meaning it burns and they don't have a clue why). Good luck to you.

Re: Mouth Pain

hi everyone,
6 years ago i had my uppers removed. what a relief. due to pain i have decided to have the rest out as well. every tooth has had a root canal so i cannot feel cavaties when they start. fibro does not win this one. i have had 17 root canals and fibro just keeps working away at my mouth. no teeth, no place for fibro to play.
yea, i know it's an intense choice. for me it is the only sane answer.
i hope you all find relief. i am excited. weird as that sounds. no more infections, no more cavaties and easy to clean. yea, that i can do!
peace,
bluelakelady

Try the Vitamin B12. This is what my coworker was diagnosed with. They did bloodwork to check her vitamin levels & B12 was low. She got a shot & within a few days she was feeling less pain. Now she gets one shot a month & has no pain.

You can buy it in a sublinual form just to see to save you a trip to the Dr. Its cherry flavored & inexpensive, especially in the long run.. If it can save your vacation.
