Unhappy Just diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and feeling hopeless

I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia a few days ago. I switched to Cymbalta (from Zoloft, which made me feel drained) a few weeks ago and so far I really like it. I was also put on Lyrica (about a week ago) and it doesnít seem to do anything but help me sleep through the night, with the help of Ambien. Sleeping through the night is amazing (I had forgotten what it was like). So far though, it hasnít helped with the pain. I am in excruciating pain and nothing seems to help.

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions for anything involving fibromyalgia? I have also been looking for a new healthy vegetarian diet to help with it (I am not that healthy of a vegetarian. I am working on that one, which is why I could use some advice). I also have slightly bulging discs, mild scoliosis and premature arthritis in a few discs in my lower back. Are there any good pain medications that won't make me gain weight or make me even more exhausted all day?

I really need some hope. This pain is too much to handle. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Just diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and feeling hopeless

You and I have alot of the same health issues. Fibro, Scoliosis, bulging disc and PAIN. I have had fibro most of my life but, was only diagnosed in 2005. I am 44 years old. Cymbalta, Lyrica, Savella has not helped. I take hydrocodone when in alot of pain. Other times just ache till I can't stand it anymore. Getting your mind somehow off the pain can help. I scrap, work puzzles or play on computer. I am constantly researching fibro. I know quite abit about it. It helps to talk to others with your same health issues. Hang in there!!!

Re: Just diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and feeling hopeless

Dear LexiB,
My heart goes out to you. I was at the same place when I was 35 yrs.
I filled a yellow-pad single paper of symptoms. My Dr. said (I do not know Priscilla, unless you have Fibromyalgia. Remember, this was 1977 and the health care industry did not recognize this as real.
My girlfriend in 1980 got so sick and fatigued that it would take her 15 min. to get out of the tub!

She is a perfectionist and would feel up to inviting people for dinner.
She would get them seated, the food out and she would go to bed.
Her fatigue lasted over a year. She gave up her job as a dental asst. Now, she can work 3 days a week and pace herself. She went to doctors in B.C. who told her it was in her head or because she wasn't having sex with her husband. We were both horrified!!
I was in nursing school and was scared to death that she would die from a rare disease.

She now has grandchildren and has cut back on what she used to be able to do. (probably some little factor is we are getting older. LOL

Stress caused me to begin making errrors and because of brain fog, I had to give up my beloved career. I had wanted to work until I was 80. Now I wondered if I would even live that long!!!

Today I am on Trazadone 150 mg. for sleep which works very well. I have not tried Ambian. (Trazadone is cheap.)

I have had great results with Cymbalta. It cut my pain my 85%. For pain I use 10 mg. of Oxycontin when needed.
I stopped Cymbalta and tried Prozac. Worked pretty good but I do not like being on the same drug too long.
Now I am trying Lyrica 150 mg.
I am still sleeping well WHICH IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU GET YOUR REST.
Other than the 2 days after doing my marathon house cleaning, my pain has been relatively shortlived.
I too have degenerative joint disease, arthritis, and a couple of bulging discs. We will always have back pain but my med regeime really helps.
I look after 2 dogs 4 hours a day 4 times a week. I clean my friend's house
four hours
a week. I have 5 chickens, 3 labs, 1 bunny, and 1 ferral cat.

I try to find time for genealogy, birding and gardening etc. Right now I am arranging a 50 year grad. reunion. Oh yes, I also volunteer for the "Death with Dignity Law'.
As you can see I am very active. You will learn (likely the hardway), that if you have 2 days of fun lined up, you may have to pick only one. There is a chance if you try to do 2, you will be so fatigued on the second day
that you will not be able to attend the 2nd fun thing.
We were in Vienna on a riverboat cruise with some other friends. We had been sight-seeing all day and would do it again the next day. Well that first evening the group was going to see the Vienna Boys Choir. I debated and debated but knew realisticly I could not partake in all 3 functions. As a result I never saw the Choir. Mabe the next time LOL.

I hope I have helped you and not "bummed you out!"
Please feel free to contact me anytime to talk or to ask about signs and symptoms
Take care. There is hope but your doc. must get your pain under control.
Priscilla

Re: Just diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and feeling hopeless

All good advice here. Especially about pacing yourself and getting good sleep. I take a combo of Lyrica, Cymbalta and Savella, all very low dose and thinking of weaning off of some it. I have very little pain. If I have break thru pain, I take hydrocodone.

One thing that works wonderfully for me is that I gave up simple sugar and most all wheat. I am not a celiac but I don't really eat bread or pasta, esp anything white. Lots of protein such as eggs and fish. I take fish oil, vitamins D, B12 and a good multi. I take magnesium at night. I go for a monthly massage and to water aerobics a couple of times per week.

Re: Just diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and feeling hopeless

Hi, I find your post very interesting--I have just given up wheat and I am cuttting down on sugar, The book I read said to do it gradually. I'm hoping it will give me more energy. I just have to get my pain under better control so I can participate in a better life style. I have found a chiropractor who is slowly but surely helping. He is very pro Fibromyalgia--this helps my sanity. Can't get over the amount of people who don't believe it exhists[sorry fibro fog today spelling is right off]
I.m off to my chiro now----feeling positive a better life style is just around the corner
Well at least with my pain under control

Re: Just diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and feeling hopeless

i know someone who says they have fibro but has yet to be diagnosed or see a specialist, and keeps just filling the scripts of 180 hydrodone, 150 methadone, xanax, soma35, norco10, adderoll, etc. I know I have been asked by my doctor if I thought I had fibro because I tested for mono in high school and again recently and get very run down easily, but I can't imagine taking that much and being able to function? does that seem high?
