Newbie with Questions... Could this be Fibromyalgia?

Hello everyone,

Thanks for reading my thread. I know there must be a lot of threads with the same questions as mine, but searching the first few pages, I didn't see one!

I am going to be calling the doctor Tuesday for an appointment. My first question is, can I just go to my regular family doctor or is there a specialist I should talk to this about?

I'm not even sure what I have. I have SEVERE anxiety and mood swings. I'm going to be divorced soon if I don't fix this. I am very tired a lot of the times and have trouble concentrating. I'll be in the middle of a sentence and totally lose my train of thought.

Another symptom is the pain of course... If someone touches me in the right spot the pain is almost unbearable. Like just tonight, I reached in the backseat to hand something to my daughter and my shoulder blade pressed against the car seat. Hurt VERY bad for at least 30-45 seconds. Probably 2-3 minutes before the pain was completely gone. Sometimes if I scratch an itch too hard, I go through the same pain.

I recently had comments that my lymph nodes looked swollen??!! Weird I thought, but read that could be a symptom. I also feel hot a lot and sometimes swear I'm coming down with a virus, but never do. I used to just brush that off, but then again tonight, I read that was a sign!

I also have a lot of headaches! I probably have them at least 4 times a week. Sometimes they turn into migraines. They tend to be tension headaches too. I read that can be caused by tight, painful muscles in your upper back and neck.

I also have joint pain that flares up with temperature, humidity, and pressure changes. Sometimes if I end up getting cold, then my legs (from my knees to my ankles) will just throb. I have to take Tylenol/Ibuprofen to get it to stop. Sometimes my wrists to my elbows will hurt too.

Now, what I don't have....constant all the time, all over body pain. I'm not sure what is meant by "flare ups" either. Does this put you all out for a few days or something? I haven't had that.

I'm just so confused and concerned about this. I would have never dreamed I had Fibromyalgia. I have two friends who have it and after telling them a few times how I didn't feel well, they said it sounded like what they had.

Thanks for reading if you've made it this far!

I would greatly appreciate any advice you all may have. I understand that you have to rule out everything else before you get a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia, but from the list of symptoms I've seen online, I think I fit in pretty well.

Thanks again!
Sara

Re: Newbie with Questions....Could this be Fibromyalgia?

I will pray that you are going thru something now that will soon be over. In other words I pray you don't have fibro. Maybe a quick fix for you will do. Go to your dr. don't mention fibro though. Maybe you just need a pick me up shot. Who knows. I just don't want to see another person dx with this dreaded disease that has no answers, no cures, just no answers. Two days again I was riding the four wheeler with my 5 year old grandchild feeling good better then I have in months. Then Sunday morning I wake up with a big time flare. I feel like someone has frogged me all over specially on the sides of my arms. But, one good day with my baby is worth a week of flares. Good days are very few and in between.
Good Luck with you appt. lets us know how it goes.

I hope that you do not have fibro also. The best place to start is your GP. Warning, not all of them will deal with or even "believe in" fibromyalgia. I believe that a rheumatologist might be a good doctor to treat fibro. I got my diagnosis from a pain clinic. I see their fibro specialist next week. Good luck!!!!

I would up going to a rheumatologist as well. I had a really great physical exam and blood work and yes, it's fibro and sounds similar to you. I would start there, they seem to be really up on things. Good luck and keep up posted. Feel better.

I agree with others, Rheumatologist. It sounds like the beginning symptoms anyway but only he/she can decide that. I hope you dont either. But the sooner you get it checked out the better. It can take awhile to get the right meds. that will work for you, everyone is different. That is if you want to take meds? Keep us posted.Sending gential hugs. home sweet home

Re: Newbie with Questions....Could this be Fibromyalgia?

Hi There,
Dont just see a family practice dr. See a Rheumotologist. They are specialized in fibro diagnosis. It may not happen right away-the diagnosis, I mean. You may go through many tests and lots and lots of questions but fibro is not a diagnosis that drs like to give out easily. Be patient, but feel good that you are making your 1st step to your health recovery!! You may also be referred, like myself and many others to a gastrointerologist, a neurologist, an eye specialist, a pulmonologist, a pain management, and so on. But you are on your way and you should be proud of yourself!! Keep your self together some how-maybe this board can help or some close friends. Also, sometimes a massage will help greatly espcially with the neck pain. So sorry you are going thru all of this. Wish I could do more but I am listening.

Re: Newbie with Questions....Could this be Fibromyalgia?

I was diagnosed with fibro 10 years ago. I am now 61 and just completed menopause.. Everyday I have a new complaint. Saturday I had to go to the ER for back pain and hard time breathing. Couldn't find a thing wrong. I just read about someone else with back pain and breathing with fibro. Didn't know that would happen from fibro. I"m a wreck. Husband is getting sick of my ailments. Help..

Re: Newbie with Questions... Could this be Fibromyalgia?

The problem with GP's is that they only do CBC scan and typically everything is in normal range and they end it at that point. I kept on my GP about the fact the pain hasn't gone away, it was keeping me from living a normal life. He finally sent me to a rheumatologist and sent all my blood test, EKG results. The test he failed to do was an a.n.a and now I will be going to the dr again tomorrow to discuss the results. Rheumatologist is guessing Lupus. He also ordered a urinalysis and culture. I had UTI. On medication for that. Good luck. Hope you get an answer. Although no one wants fibro or lupus, hearing everything is normal is tormenting.
