Frustrated

My Thyroid labs show that I am Hypothyroid. Understandable since I've gained weight... I've tried different meds & always done best on Armour. Each time I've had a Dr switch me to something else I have felt hypo, gained weight, ect. The Armour was hard to get about a year & 1/2 ago so the Dr switched me.
So, I buy meds "elsewhere"... Not to get into detail. Anyhow, I talked to the Pharmacy the other day & they can order me the Armour. So, I called the office for a prescription, just had labs done 2 weeks ago. My Dr doesn't want to switch me. I'm trying not to be difficult but I told the nurse that I'm not willing to go back on the Levothyroxine... I hated having to admit I get my meds elsewhere... So, the nurse is going to talk to the Dr but it looks like I'll have to see another Dr or something... ugh...
Also, I asked the other day about another pain med, the nurse said nothing & I hate to push. How do you find a Pain Clinic? Do you need a referral?

Re: Frustrated

If your doctor is not willing to work with you, especially when you know what meds work for you and which ones don't, then you may want to find another doctor. I am lucky to have a primary doctor that works with me and actually listens and explains things to me. Having to deal with all of this only adds stress which makes everything feel worse and it is certainly not worth additional pain to worry about meds. I also had to see a doctor other than my primary (when I lived in the south) because I couldn't get the pain meds I needed for my spinal injury and it can be hard but if you get what you need the effort to research and start up with a new doctor can be worth it. Good luck!

Re: Frustrated

Thank You
I've actually only seen her about 3 times. But she's the one that Diagnosed me with Chronic Fatigue & sent me to the Neurologist... I guess I just expected her to help more than she actually does...
I'll have to see if I can get into a endocrinologist for my Thyroid... Not sure what to do about pain meds... It would be nice if we could have relief atleast sometimes..

Re: Frustrated

I know how you feel about the pain meds, Tori. I've been going through junk with my rheumy regarding pain meds too. He didn't prescribe them, then when I asked for them he scolded me. He ended up sending me a prescription for vicodin which for some reason has never worked for me at all. So basically I have a bottle of useless narcotics.
Most pain management docs require a referral I think. Especially for insurance purposes. I looked into getting one but I would have to go through my family doc for a referral and he refuses to see me for anything related to fibro. I guess I could demand that he see me if it gets bad enough, but I'm still hanging in there fairly well most days, so I guess I'll just stick with the rheumy and see if I can talk to him about getting me something that works. Hopefully an endocrinologist will be able to help get your thyroid levels comfortable for you again. <3

Re: Frustrated

Thank You
Are you able to get another Dr? Luckily mine is willing to talk to me about the fibro which is good... I'm thinking that if I see a neurologist he'll be able to help me with maybe meds...
I wonder why Vicodin doesn't work for you... I haven't tried it in years but took it after my first child was born. It made me really sick though but probably because I hadn't eaten enough or something...

Re: Frustrated

I probably could find another doc, he is part of a healthcare center in our town and there are two docs in his office. I wanted to get in with the other doc, but she is so popular that she had no openings. Maybe I'll see if I can get on her waiting list.
I have no idea why vicodin doesn't work for me. It never has. I might as well take tylenol, it works better. And I always eat with any medication because I have a sensitive stomach. If I don't I sometimes throw the pills back up. Yuck. :P
I hope you can find a doctor who can help you with your thyroid problems. I don't have issues with that myself but I have heard it can be miserable.
Going to keep it short tonight, it's raining and I'm hurting. Hope you can find some relief soon. <3

Tori, my mother is going through the same thing as you..Been on the levo and still feeling the hypo symptoms and the labs are showing normal levels of thyroid hormone. I finally told her its time to put your foot down with our NP and tell her you want to switch to Armour. She was terrified that our NP would be upset. Marianne thought it was a great idea and gave her a RX right then and there..I believe one needs to be proactive and suggest and discuss alternative therapies when traditional is not working. If your doctor is resistant to change, fire her/him. Get one who will..when I first started seeing my NP I told her what worked for me and what didn't and what meds I wanted to be on..We have been best pals ever since. And she and I are even friends on a social networking website..It is your body..I hope that things work out. My mom got Armour at the pharmacy we go to for 8 dollars..And it is a natural product. Sometimes synthetics just stop working..Good luck honey. And hope you and yours are well xoxoxoxo
love and peace

Re: Frustrated

Thanks
I can't remember the name of a Thyroid Specialist.. But I'm thinking it's time I see one. I just can't stand the fact that I was on Armour for 6 years & did great. When she switched me I had started Birth Control so I thought it was that.. Then I've blamed my Fibro meds.

Re: Frustrated

Tori, it is easy to get armour now, it is in production again. When you can't get armour from the regular pharmacy, you can have it compounded at a compounding pharmacy. Some pharmacies not only deal in regular drugs, but they do compounding. Even if there isn't one in your town that you can drive to, you can call one in a nearby town and they can compound your armour and mail it to you. Believe me, I understand your frustration with synthetic thyroid hormone. My DIL and I both feel the same way and have vowed never to take synthetic again. It does not work for us, it is just like poison to us. You never feel like you have a high enough dose and your numbers never get in a range that makes you feel better. Look for a new endocrinologist and when you call for an appt. ask if the doctor will prescribe armour. And be careful if you are getting your drugs from other countries, I keep hearing scary stories about that.

I feel for you, I know how tough it is to feel bad with your thyroid and then everything else on top of it. It is sometimes hard to separate fibro aches and pains from thyroid ones. At least if you get your thyroid under control, then you can work on the fibro.

Good Luck and keep us posted how everything goes.
Glojer

Re: Frustrated

Hi Glojer!
I haven't seen you around lately... How are you doing?
Thank You Do you know if we have to have a referral to see a endocrinologist?
I hate buying my meds elsewhere, just didn't know what else to do... I did make sure they were reputable...

Re: Frustrated

Tori, my mum gets her Armour at the pharmacy where we do our grocery shopping, it was I think 8.99 for 30. Which is pretty dang cheap. I don't know why on earth the medical profession stops using natural products in favor of synthetics. Where is the sense in that??? I swear the drug companies are ruling the country.
peace and love

Re: Frustrated

Hi Tori, I haven't been checking the boards as much lately. Haven't felt that great and have been using my energy mostly to babysit. I don't know how you young moms do it, but I guess I should. I did it and so did my mother and lots of other moms. Our son and daughter in law do foster parenting and they got a little boy who was badly abused and has many issues. DIL has had to take him to lots of docs, dentists and the like and I babysit their 2yr old and sometimes both the 2 and 8yr. old. I figure that is the least I can do to help this little 9yr. old to get on a better path in life. I admire them for taking in these poor children when they have the two of their own, but boy it gets hard sometimes to keep up.....giggle.....it must be old age.....giggle. This past week they also took in a 17yr. old who is graduating H.S. in a few weeks and will be leaving for college in the fall. Her last foster home was so bad she left it herself and went to a youth homeless shelter. So it will be a fun summer with all the activity.

Sorry I digressed a little there. To answer your question....giggle...it depends on your insurance whether you need a referral or not to see an endocrinologist. You know you already have thyroid problems so there isn't a question of the doc requiring one. However since and endo would be considered a specialist not a PCP, your insurance may require it for payment. And you may want to check and see if the endo doc you choose is within network or out of network. That is if you have that kind of insurance. I highly recommend seeing a endo for thyroid issues, some are better than others. My endo does an ultra sound of your thyroid right there in the office and they do their own blood work and best of all they listen. I say they because I see one of the docs and braveman sees the other and both listen to what you are saying. If armour is best for you, don't ever worry about getting it even when supplies were low, like a few years ago. Use a compounding pharmacy or do like DIL and I did, we went to different pharmacies and filled our prescriptions with whatever they had and when we couldn't get that anymore, we went to compounding.

Glojer

Re: Frustrated

Glojer~ That's wonderful your Son & Daughter in law do that! I'd love to foster one day when the kids are grown. My husbands a Corrections Officer & he doesn't like the idea because he's worried one would end up in his facility... But he's a great roll model. We have a neighbor boy who practically lived here. He knows he can't get in trouble because not only does he have to deal with his parents, but also us! lol
I have an appt with a Endo in July... It's to far out so I made an appt with my husbands Dr for Monday... I hope they'll switch me!

Pammyann~ With Armour you dont' feel Hypo.... With other meds my blood work came out fine but I would feel soooo hypo... I believe most meds are T3 but Armour is T3 & T4. The T4 is converted to T3 as needed. I may have the T3 & T4 backwards but you probably get the point If you are having problems with your meds I definitely suggest asking your Dr to let you try Armour.
