Are Epstein-Barr Virus and Fibromyalgia related?

I was diagnosed with mononucleosis when I was 17 years old. Now 10-11 years later, I am suffering from fibro symptoms. I'm wondering if the two are at all related?

EBV is so common, that I think the statistics say 80% of people have had it. I have never had fibromyalgia diagnosed based on EBV, but I did have chronic fatigue syndrome diagnosed 11 years ago based on that and a high ANA test.

Almost everyone gets infected with EBV but only those that actually get sick from it will ever know that they had it. I know there is a link between EBV and autoimmune diseases (I had mono very young, at 8 and now I have Lupus and Sjogren's) but I don't know about fibromyalgia.

My nurse practitioner tells me that she thinks they are related. I have Fibro and not sure if I was infected at any time. I had a test for EBV and it showed negative.

EBV doesn't necessarily cause mono either. I've had a positive test and I've never had mono.

Re: Are Epstein-Barr Virus and Fibromyalgia related?

I think it's just a correlation, but not causation.

Generally people with fms are more likely to get viruses and things like that because the immune system isn't functioning optimally.
