does anyone get uti's now that they have fibro?

I had a UTI in January and now another, I know that all that close, but my antibiotic is done tonight and I still feel like it's not really all the way gone. I felt the same way last time and it was, I guess I am more sensitive to pain now. I am doing the cranberry thing too. Just wondering if anyone gets them more now and how long does it take to feel better? Thanks

OMG the same thing happened to me. I had a UTI when i was not diganosed with Fibro i had really bad stomach cramps and it hurt inside and the doctor said I had a UTI. After I took the medicine My stomache was not better I saw a differen't doctor and he said he did NOT believe that doctor he said she was wrong that i didn't even have a UTI.

Re: does anyone get uti's now that they have fibro?

Oh yes, numerous. Urine test at dr's positive....sent for culture...negative. I haven't had one for over a year. I drink TONS of water, (ugh) I stay away from artificial sweetners and coke and have my coffee only in the morning. I would also use an alka sweltzer. It stops that burning I woud sometimes get. I also take cranberry pills when I don't forget

Re: does anyone get uti's now that they have fibro?

hi,
i went thru a period that lasted about 3 years. the only way they could get a clean specimen was to catheterize me every time for a sample. it would show minimal infection but it was enough for my fibroaware body to feel it. i took numerous antibiotics and then tried cranberry suppliment. at first i took 13000 mg a day and 1 antibiotic. the infection went away and has never returned. nor has that feeling like i have an infection.
for myself i think fibro was bored with all the old haunts and picked a new one. my kidneys and bladder. i would be in so much discomfort, way too much for the tiny infection i had. yet when i went for surgery there was enough there to give me blood poisioning and land me in hospital for 4 days on heavy antibiotics. since that last infection after surgery it slowly went away over the following year. now it's just gone and everything is "normal" again. whatever normal is? giggle.
peace,
blue
ps. stick with the cranberry. take it at night or with food so it won't upset your tummy. i still take 1000 mg a day. just in case! giggle.

Re: does anyone get uti's now that they have fibro?

I had lots of UTI's before I was diagnosed. I probably had Fibro just didn't know it yet. I drink TONS of water, lots of ice tea, 1 cup a coffee in the morning and virtually no soda and it seems to keep it away.

If you don't think its gone, call the doctor. Maybe you need another round of antibiotics.

Re: does anyone get uti's now that they have fibro?

You are not alone! This is such a common complaint amongst FMS people. There will be times your bladder is expelling small amounts of fibro gunk that abrades the bladder and sets you up for infection. This can even develop into an episode of Interstitial Cystitis which is an absolutely miserable condition. A lot of people will automatically go for the cranberry supplements. This is the delicate issue. . . . in some people this supplement will help. But in others, the acidic condition of the cranberry will cause more irritation and make your situation worse than before (ouch! ). If this is the case, avoiding any acidic foods such as OJ will need to be eliminated. For me, the cranberry was not a good idea. But what did work was drinking a lot of water to flush out the bladder and that fibro gunk. "Prelief" (which is a tablet sold in the feminine aisle of your drug store) may help you as well.

Isn't this simply an annoying situation?!?!?!?!

Re: does anyone get uti's now that they have fibro?

Yes, I have had 2 UTI's in the past year and 2 bouts with conjuctivitis. Had antibiotics given for both. Rarely had this in my life before.

Re: does anyone get uti's now that they have fibro?

I used to get recurrent UTI's and I could tell in between that the antibiotic just WAS NOT getting the job done. Constant bladder irritation and pain, even when the cultures came back negative. I later found that the bacteria can burrow into the bladder wall and go "dormant" for a while, and then flare up. They had put me on all the "big gun" antibiotics like Cipro and even the daily low-dose antibiotics (which it turned out I was allergic to). Oddly, what finally took the bacteria out completely was Augmentin which I had never taken because my doc had me (mistakenly) down as being allergic to it. I could tell immediately that the bacteria was gone - the irritation and the bladder pain went away totally. I haven't had a problem since. You might ask your doc to try a different antibiotic next time, just in case. It might help.

I had the same experience as you, come to think of it. I was on a low-dose, but powerful antibiotic for about six months, then the urologist switched me to even a lower dose for a couple of months after that. It knocked that bug right out!

Re: does anyone get uti's now that they have fibro?

I have had tons of uti's before my diagnosis, a new thing since my diagnosis has been kidney stones, no fun.....I think we probably tend to let ourselves get dehydrated,So my Doc said after the kidney stones try to avoid caffeine and keep the liquids going cause thats how these infections and stones form. I have cut my diet cokes to two small cans a day, but I have replaced them with sprite zero which he said is ok. But if you can drink lots of water try to I know this is the best for us, I myself am not a good water drinker.

Re: does anyone get uti's now that they have fibro?

I started getting UTIs, was given antibiotics and it never seemed to clear the symptoms completely. Then I found out about D-mannose powder. It is amazing for that problem. Whenever I get any sign of a UTI I take it until the symptoms are gone and it clears it up.

Re: does anyone get uti's now that they have fibro?

I always feel like I have a UTI, but I don't think I do. I feel an urgent need to urinate about every hour or so, and I have some pain when going. I haven't been tested for a UTI, but I've had this problem for several months.

My mother, who is bedbound, gets a UTI about every month or two. She retains urine, and I have to do an in and out catherization two or three times a day on her. I give my mother D-Mannose. People swear by it for preventing UTI's. I also give her cranberry juice every day. Worth a try.

Re: does anyone get uti's now that they have fibro?

i had tons of uti's way before i was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and i could not understand why. i drink cranberry juice all the time and for some reason it wasnt helping. i can recall one of my urgent care drs asking me"do u wipe from front to back?, do u urinate before and after sex?, when ur partner is hitting you from the back and his penis slips out does wipe himself off before having sex again?" my answers were yes to all of his questions (although i think the last question was a bit outta line). his response to me was "so why are we here?", as if i was lying about my cleanliness.needless to say i have new dr but i still have some urinary problems lots of abdominal pain-only thing i can tell u is to drink plenty of water and cranberry juice stay away from caffeine and sodas(esp. coke pepsi mountain dew).i also eat lots of dried cranberries. i dont really understand why this causes uti's. hope i was helpful

Re: does anyone get uti's now that they have fibro?

I have had a UTI for over 14 months now, the Dr. has put me on meds and it never really goes away. He keeps trying different antibiotics. I just had a culture and senceativity test done and I go back to the Dr. on Friday, hopfully something can be done, this infection is wiping me out.

Re: does anyone get uti's now that they have fibro?

Fibro gunk causes crystals in your bladder. This gunk is like sandpaper which causes irritation with the next step being a bladder infection. It can sometimes lead to interstitial cystitis. Drinking a lot of water will definitely help. BUT, if you get to the point of interstitial cystitis, you do not want to drink cranberry juice because it is highly acidic and will cause more problems. Staying away from caffeine is good as caffeine irritates the uretha. Water, water, water!

Blessings,
Kirstee

My Fibro came on like a freight train, I went on disability and didn't have much of a life for about 3 years. Gradually it wained and I was left dealing with a variety of ailments that were came and went in cycles. About 3 years ago I started getting UTI's about every 6 weeks for almost a year. Finally went to Urologist who gave me an estrogen cream to be applied at the vaginal opening. It worked wonderfully but getting the dose right wasn't easy and remembering to apply was also a challenge. Apparently one of the many things that estrogen does is to help your body fight infections, I had no idea. I took it a step farther and found a doctor who believes in hormone therapy for fibromyalgia patients. I had extensive blood work and found that I am low on multiple hormones. The Dr's theory is that there is no reason to hang out at the lowest acceptable level, he tries to optomize your levels. I am now taking 5 different hormone/vitamins (including thyroid replacement, which was at the lowest acceptable level). It is a little expensive but for the first time since diagnosis I feel like me. And besides I save a fortune on copays not having to see the dr. all the time. I can't say I don't have bad days, but my life is no longer centered around the fact that I have fibromyalgia. Hope this post will help someone to normalize your life.

Re: does anyone get uti's now that they have fibro?

Hi Khardy: I'm so glad you found something that works for you. It can be trying to find the right doctor! I went through an every-six-week-bladder-infection stage that went on for a year. The urologist I saw also prescribed estrogen cream applied the same way. He also prescribed a low-dose antibiotic which I took for 7-8 months. I recovered pretty well after this therapy, but you hear so much about overuse of antibiotics.

Glad you are here.
