Multiple Drug Allergies/Chemical Sensitivities

Does anyone else have multiple drug allergies/multiple chemical sensitivities? I have nearly 10 drugs I am allergic to, and the list feels like it is growing. I am also allergic to EDD (Ethylenediamine Dihydrochloride), which is why I am allergic to two antihistamines. The other drugs I am allergic to include 3 different antibiotics (in 3 different classes, leaving only 1 left that I can take--Sulfa drugs), 2 blood pressure meds (lisinopril and toprol); and most recently Flexeril, and possibly Lyrica and Cymbalta. Does anyone else have multiple drug allergies or chemical sensitivities like this? It seems like every new drug I try, my body just goes crazy. My allergic reactions to drugs always manifest themselves as severe hives/rash/itching, never anything anaphylactic in nature.

As an FYI, I have had FM for 17 years. The first few were a little dicey in terms of finding the right meds for the sleep disorder, learning to manage my life and coming to terms with it; but I lived incredibly well with it for the last 10+ years. A recent tolerance issue and an allergic reaction with sleep meds forced me off those I was taking and now we are trying to find a new one/combo that works for me--but drug allergies plague me.

Thanks to anyone who will share here.
Peace,
Girlcoastie

Re: Multiple Drug Allergies/Chemical Sensitivities

Bummer on the allergies. But there are lots of natural and homeopathic remedies you can try. Do lots of reading here on this board and you'll find all kinds of good info that do not include prescription drugs to help deal with FM. Many of them work for one person and not the next, but it's worth the trial and error if it will make your life even just a little better.

Re: Multiple Drug Allergies/Chemical Sensitivities

Been there, done that. I'm allergic to the sulfa drugs, penicillins and erythromycin. I can still have tetracycline-based antibiotics.

I also have bad side effects from antihistamines and most pain relievers. Last winter I went through a knee fracture without pain treatment because no one was willing to prescribe something I could safely take.

I just try to hang in there, you know? I rely a lot on non-drug treatments for the fibro, including hot baths, massage, gentle exercise and sleeping on a comfortable bed.

WoodsWalker, thanks for your words. I am spending time looking around the boards here. Also looking at non-prescription drug options too. Thanks again!

Jane, thanks. I have more drug allergies (not just side effects) than anyone I know and it's making me a bit nuts. I'm hanging in there. Glad to know I'm not alone--though I wouldn't wish this on anyone!

Girlcoastir, Don't forget to search the web too. Try searching natural or holistic treatment for fibro.

I hope you can find something that helps.

Re: Multiple Drug Allergies/Chemical Sensitivities

I was diagnosed with fibro about 9 months ago. I have had multiple drug allergies for quite some time. Everything from opioids to most antibiotics including sulfa drugs. I dread getting sick because I find that doctors are hesitant to prescribe anything. I've tried an allergist to no avail and have resorted to taking claritin on a daily basis. It keeps my milder chemical allergies like SLS and parabens down to a minimum. I wonder if there's a connection between fibro and drug allergies?
