New here-just diagnosed today with fibromyalgia

Hey guys! I am a 29 year old mother of two amazing little boys! I started having trouble with my pregnancies (including 1 miscarriage) and things got worse after the birth of my son who is almost 4. My rheumy said I had uctd and started me on meds. They either didn't work or made me sick. Things had got so bad I couldn't make plans I didn't feel like playing with my kids etc. I changed doctors, both pcp and rheumy. I was just diagnosed today with fibromyalgia and told to start cymbalta 30 mg a day. I know nothing about fibro but plan to research it. I came across this page in doing so and wanted to join and was curious if any of you had any tips or suggestions. I would love to hear from you. Tha k you and God Bless!

Re: New here-just diagnosed today with fibromyalgia

My advice is don't stress or worry about what didn't get done in a day. Take it easy when you can and put your kids before a clean house or you won't have energy or strength for your kids.

That is something I have learned and had to make myself do. I would be so stressed at getting things done when I could that my children suffered. Now I pick 2 things to do/clean while they are in school and rest the rest of the time til they are home and my evenings are spent with them.

You will have days where you can't do a thing because the pain and/or exhaustion is too much and that is okay!!! You will learn what triggers the flares and what doesn't. Just take it one day at a time. Try not to plan things in advance in case you have to cancel. I have disappointed many friends amd even my kids by having to cancel something that was planned because I happened to wake up in extreme pain or migraine or something. Now I tell my children if I can then we can do it (whatever ot is they may want to do). I also have backup days or will do the fun thing on a earlier day if its a not a really bad day for me. My kids know that the fun activity WILL be done.

Re: New here-just diagnosed today with fibromyalgia

Thank you so much!! I have stressed because of the house work and kids and homework etc! I will try to relax and learn as I go! The hardest thing for me is feeling like I let hubby and kids down cause I never feel good. Thank you so much for your help! I really appreciate it! Have you ever tried cymbalta? Curious as to how it helps and the side effects. I start mine tomorrow..

Re: New here-just diagnosed today with fibromyalgia

Unfortunately as a mom and wife we will always feel like we let our families down. It's our own guilt. I have been on cymbalta since 2010 and it has worked great for me. Doesnt make pain go fully away as I deal with nerve pain, but does help with fibro pain and depression. Had no side effects with it.

I am raising 4 children and it takes a toll on me and I tend to push myself to extremes since I don't want to let them down and then my body reminds me to take it easy with being in a ton of pain and not able to do much and I hate it. It's a cycle for me and most of us sufferers.

Also what you eat could make a difference. Everyone with fibro is different in what works for us. I have to stay away from dairy, gluten, and sugars. I have more energy that way.

Re: New here-just diagnosed today with fibromyalgia

I had not realized that food could be affecting me. I still have lots to learn lol I will have to do some serious honing in and see what if any food make it worse. I am pretty confident it is much worse when I am stressed or exhausted which makes sense. I hope to see some serious improvement with cymbalta. Thanks again!

Re: New here-just diagnosed today with fibromyalgia

You are very welcome . Took me a long time to figure out about the foods. Also have ibs and those foods irritate it and just happens to help my fibro by eliminating those. Stress does not help fibro at all but who is stress free these days . Feel free to post as often and even to rant as we all understand what it's like. Hugs

Re: New here-just diagnosed today with fibromyalgia

Welcome!
I hate Cymbolta. It did seem to help with pain but that, Lyrica & Nuerontin made my fatigue even worst. I didn't realize it till I went on Savella. Cymbolta was a nightmare to go off of. Please do some reading on it... Savella passes through you liver which is why I stated that with my pharmisists advice... But it makes me sweat which sux.
We're raising 4 kids & it's tough. Luckily most of them are older & a huge help! They make allot of messes... They are 13, 10, 9 & 3. They are such a big help with the youngest also!
I feel guilty because I ask more than I wish I did from my kids. I have a hard time keeping on top of everything, especially with 3 of them in scouts. I also ha to quit raising birds & any extra income. Couldn't afford to get my son in basketball right now. I don't have the energy to play. I try to watch tv with them & take the time to talk about anything they want. Arguing, yelling, ect drives me nuts & I wish I had more patience... When I've over done it cooking & cleaning or whatever, I get grumpy. So I feel bad. I've had to learn to tell people no if I can't do something. That's a tough one... Unfortunetly we are always going to feel guilt even though we didn't ask for this. My husband told me recently that I hold everyone back from doing stuff, that hurts...
Just do your best not to stress or over do it. Try to enjoy everything that you do have I'm thankful it's me that's sick & not one of my kids... Things could always be worst...

Re: New here-just diagnosed today with fibromyalgia

I am so sorry for the hurtful words that were directed at you!!! I too have had my hubby not understand and a few weeks ago he asked me if it was all in my head or if I was doing it for attention. REALLY?! yes babe, that's it, I make myself miserable so u will give me your attention by telling me what a pansy I am! Lol since then he has really changed and he did apologize to me for saying those things. It is hard on the spouse and kids also. My oldest is 6 and my little guy will be 4 next week. They are my life. I feel guilty a lot by not feeling like playing with them or takin them here or there. They are good sweet kids and always look out for momma. I am thankful I found this board and found people that understand what it's like to be us! Even though family and friends try, they just can't grasp it. Today is my second day of cymbalta. Last night I felt so sick I was miserable! Today is somewhat better but not much. Not sure if it is the cymbalta or just another yucky day! I pray you are feeling well today and you are able to enjoy your precious children like you want! I think that is the hardest part! I am concerned about my 6 year old somewhat now especially after my diagnosis. He started complaining probably a year or so ago his legs hurt real bad. Not daily but enough that I took him in and dr thought its because he's so active. Since August he has complained of being dizzy and headaches. Doc thinks its because of allergies. He (both kids) was preemie and have had a rough road. My oldest has been diagnosed with ADHD and takes a half milligram of tenex daily to help with that and hopefully help his legs. He is very emotional and very sensitive etc. now that I have fibro diagnosis should I be concerned he too may be dealing with some of it also? Sorry to be so lengthy!

Hi there, you might also want to search for Ayurvedic cures for Fibro because there are cures that will get you out of this illness. The earlier the illness is tackled the better chances of healing.

Re: New here-just diagnosed today with fibromyalgia

Hello Hopefully you are feeling better now! If not maybe you should call your Rhum... I'm wondering if they started you put at a too high of dose rather than working up slowly...
That's great you let the hubby have it! Lol My first Rhum described fibro to my husband all wrong. Basically said our brains feel pain that isn't there. So my husband said the next day "I wish you could tell your brain not to feel pain".
It was tough for awhile but luckily he has improved allot since then. Still has his moments but not as much. I used to get so depressed because if his comments. Now I may get irritated & chew him out lol
You have a right to be worried about your son. Moms noticed these things... My daughter started gaining weight & just changed allot when she was 4. I wanted her tested for things like thyroid & diabetes since they run in my family. But docs said she was too young. When we moved to a new town & she seen a new dr, the dr was shocked she didn't get the tests! Come to find out she has high cholesterol. It is hereditary & she'll always battle it. It's very heavy on her dads side. I feel sorry for her because she battles her weight. But I keep the kids busy, they don't watch much tv or anything. She's a vegetarian & on a high protein low salt diet. She eats small portions & doesn't eat often. It's rare if we buy pop, ice cream or chips. I dunno. But like you, I worry about her having fibro. He complains about being tired, sore muscles & joints, ect. I read fibro is hereditary. I have 3 cousins with it & my daughters grandmother (her dads mom) has fibro. But for now if she has it, she is controlling it... So I'll just let time tell...
When I was a kid I had "growing pains". I remember having a hard time going to sleep because my legs hurt, especially my knees... I also had stomach aches, sick stomach & fatigue. But these things would hit me for awhile then go away completely, then hit again. I am allergic to wheat starch & didn't know it at the time. When I was a teen I started having allergic reactions. So that may have been part of it.... But I think it was early signs of fibro...
Have you had your sons eyes checked?
I never knew my son had vision problems till he was 4. He was crossing his eyes at the dinner table. He did that 2 days in a row so got him to a eye dr. Turns out his vision was really bad. My husband actually though he had ADHD back then because he was so busy. He didn't watch tv or really sit down to do anything. Well his vision was very poor. He has ambliopia, far sighted & astigmatism... He was in vision therapy for 4 yrs & home therapy every day. When he got his first pair of glasses his vision was still poor but better. So he started watching tv & colored between the lines. He started sitting down & dealing & coloring all the time. Drastic changes! When he was about 6 he seen a plain in the sky for the first time. He was also very clumsy & fell down allot before his glasses. I used to drive 5 hrs round trip every week then once a month for his therapy... But worth it. The specialist once told me that kids will be diagnosed with ADHD then later find out it was just their vision all along! I guess we were lucky to diagnose it early and many aren't diagnosed till they are around 6-8 yrs old... Anyhow that could explain the headaches & dizziness & maybe even the ADHD...

Re: New here-just diagnosed today with fibromyalgia

Thank you so much! His eyes are great! His pediatrician sai real bad allergies and congestion can cause the same dizziness and headaches so we are giving him allergy meds and nasal spray for 2 weeks to see if it helps. If not we will go from there. So apertura yo hear about your kiddo! It's never easy when they are sick. He is home sick today running fever and neck pain and a sore throat. Our fall break doesn't look too eventful lol my other son is turning 4 Saturday and I was going to make his cake and everything but honestly I'm not seeing it happen at this point. Sigh. Hope all is well. Thanks again!

Poor guy Hopefully he feels better soon!
Do you have a Costco by you? They have wonderful cakes! We always get those. My 13 yr old made her birthday cake this year! I couldn't complain! Saved $ & she did a wonderful job! Plus 3 of our kids have birthdays exactly 2 weeks apart... So had to buy 2 cakes already lol Our anniversary in Aug 29th, then one birthday is Sept 13th, another birthday Oct 1st , another Oct 15th then there is Halloween 2 weeks later lol

Re: New here-just diagnosed today with fibromyalgia

I am sorry that you have this stuff! Welcome to the Boards and there is lots of good info here!

I am on a combo of Cymbalta and Lyrica and they control my pain pretty well. I have hydrocodone for break thru pain.

Make sure your thyroid is tested fully (TSH, T4 and T3) as that can mimic fibro symptoms. A lot of us have thyroid too. When my thyroid wasn't being treated properly, the fatigue and pain was much worse.

Also, try some alternative things like heat, ice, massage, exercise (water aerobics are particularly good for me) healthy diet, drink lots of water, take your vitamins and good sleep. These are things that make us all feel a bit better.

My best to you,
Pam

Re: New here-just diagnosed today with fibromyalgia

Hi! It's nice to meet you! I used to live in Tulsa, OK, where you are, and that is where I had a spinal surgery that started my fibro! It seems for many people there is a traumatic physical event that instigates it. I loved Tulsa so much!

I used to work way too hard and it made my fibromyalgia much worse. I have finally learned to let things go and not be a perfectionist with my home and as a mother. Saying no and not being able to be active are the toughest things about being a mom. I actually grieved over it for a while and finally accepted it...this is where the Lord has me right now.

I have one daughter and am pregnant with #2. I am thankful my family accepts this illness, but I feel very bad when I don't feel like going to "fun" things because of my severe pain.

My 6 year old daughter gets growing pains. I have a personal theory that there is a hormonal factor involved with fibro that the doctors haven't nailed down yet. I don't worry for her yet, as her pains pass.

The things that have helped me are...
1. Nutritional supplements like calcium, magnesium, B vitamins, vit D.
2. Eating mostly fruits and vegetables.
3. Getting counseling from a pain specialist on how to relax and deal with the pain. It's a technique called mindfulness.
4. Finding a balance between what I can/can't do. I used to push myself too hard.
5. Massage.

I am intolerant to the meds....they make me have the mile-long list of side effects. When I am dizzy with blurry vision or get migraines, the dr takes me off of them. I do take Tramadol.
