Left sided pain

I am new to the board but would like to ask a question.
I know and have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia years ago, so mostly am up on the flairs etc.
Around 10 weeks ago though I started expereincing pains in the abdomen, lower and upper and bad back pain on the left side. I had a scan ran on the kidneys which showed nothing. So the dr. was assuming it was ulcers and put me on carafat. Ive been on it for two weeks now.. I still have a pain undernearth the breast cant tell weather its the colon, stomach or just what. They want to do a colonoscopy, being sick for so long now.. I managed to get into see a nurses practioner. When I told Her about the pain, she mentioned that the culprit may be Fibromyalgia.. has anyone had anything like this. If possible I dont want to go into surgery for an endoscopy or a colonoscopy.. the colonoscopy I can handle the endoscopy.. NOT so sure! So Just curious.
Thanks for your time.

Re: Left sided pain

Hi rosesnbloom

I have read that many people with fibro also have GERD/ stomach issues... Me being one of them. They can be related by slow digestion... I have an endoscopy every year and it is easier and better than a colonoscopy. No yukky stuff to take or drink...You just go to sleep for a little bit, next thing you know you are all finished and ready to have something to eat ( something light of course )...me myself I make a bee line for IHOP soon as I'm done...lol...Endoscopy will tell your doc everything he or she needs to know in order to treat you correctly instead of giving you stomach meds that don't work or you don't need. Good luck and if I were you I'd be more concerned on having a colonoscopy than an endo...Good luck and don't be worried...gentle hugs

Re: Left sided pain

:angel:Hello,
Thank you so much for your inisight on my issue. It was very much appreciated.
The reason the endo scares me so is that i tried having one before. This was years ago in Colorado with a very well known surgeon. apparently he told my x husband they could not do the procedure because my air passage is so tiny, and even complelty under sedation i was fighting them, and they were afraid of puncturing something, so they couldnt do the procedure. So I will at this time go for the colonoscopy.. actually they want to do both.. and will explain to the surgeon what I just explained to you.
The dr. I saw yesterday.. actually a nurses practioner.. had WIDE eyes when I explained the Fibromyalgia.. I destest going thought all these test to only find out its the fibromyalgia...so Im still hoping the Carafat and maybe just relaxing will help to cure it away before all this is set up.
Thanks for caring.. rosesnbloom

Re: Left sided pain

I don't think this is fibromyalgia pain. It doesn't cause abdominal pain. Has anyone mentioned possibility of diverticulitis? This is extremely common and affects the left side of colon. It can cause left sided abd. pain, back pain, sometimes fever. You mentioned upper and lower pain. Can you tell which is worse, or is it all the same? The other thing they should check are your pancreatic enzymes, as pancreatitis can cause left upper abd pain that radiates to back above the waist. This is a simple blood test. Is your abdomen tender to exam? Where it is most tender should give clues, as diverticulitis would normally be lower and pancreas issues higher near the stomach. For the endoscopy, you can ask them to give you extra numbing spray in your throat and extra sedation. If you were fighting it before, you weren't sedated enough. Good luck, and I hope you get some answers soon.

Re: Left sided pain

:)Hi rosesnbloom..I have many of the same pains you describe. I have horrible GERD and also pain primarily on the left side of my breastbone that extends down and across my left ribs. I believe it is a combination of having GERD..slow digestion but also have had chostochondritis which is an inflammation of the breastbone. Sometimes after a meal I feel like food gets "stuck" going down my esophogus and I feel pain behind the ribs on the left side until it finally gets moving. The pain goes into my back and I have to have my husband rub under my shoulder blade and I can fell the bubbles breaking up and the pain goes away awhile later. I have has so many cardiac tests and endoscopies and colonoscopy and gall bladder scans and test that measure how long it takes you to digest food. No real positive test results just the bad GERD and slow digestion and sluggish gall bladder..most can be related to Fibro maybe not the gallbladder but back pain is one of the symptom Usually the pain is on the right side where the gallbladder is but for some reason mine is in the left side..my gastro dr said some people do have pain on the left.I also have a fiibro friend with lots of stomach pain and issues and her doc feels it is the fibro (IBS)..everyone had different pains but I feel alot like you..Hopefully the meds will help your stomach..good luck!

Re: Left sided pain

Hello Ladybud,
Your post helped a lot. They did run a kidney test, supposedly it was suppose to show if diverticulitis was a cause, but Nothing showed up. I to thought about diverticulitis, because I had been dignosed with that years ago, and yes my back just above the waist was killing me for a while. Never stopped to think about the Pancreas..good thought.
Thanks for the suggestion on the endoscopy, I will make those suggestions, If indeed he needs to try to see into the stomach, but for now, Im just h oping to make it through the colonoscopy.
I will inform you as to what ends up taking place.
Its so nice to meet you.. thanks.. rosesnbloom:angel:

Re: Left sided pain

Request and push for any test that can rule out things. Don't let this pain get thrown into the fibro bucket easily. If they rule out things then it can get tossed in. I get pains on the right side, lower rib cage. Went through numerous tests and was diagnosed with chostchondritis and Tietze's Syndrome long before the fibro was diagnosed.

Hi , this is my first post on this board-- on any for that matter. I started having pains- terrible stabbing pain in my upper left quadrant and i thought it was related to my tummy tuck 8 weeks ago. But i havent had any pain whatsoever related to my surgery. The pain i have been having is insane. I have had three kids and multiple surgeries and this is the worst Pain i have ever had! I went to the ER twice ad finally got the DR To do a scan ( they were reluctant because my blood tests all came back normal) and they found gall stones!!! I have tests set up and an appointment with A GI specialist tomorrow. It IS possible to have gallbladder pain in your left side!! Hopefully i can get it taken out and carry on with my very active life!! Ive been a prisoner of my recliner for almost a week.

Re: Left sided pain

Have you had an ultra sound done of your stomach. Maybe I'm not understanding where your pain is. I have lower left side pain and upper left side pain and it is from IBS. I also have the pain up high in the stomach or breast area and that is indeed GERD. I have had the endo and colonoscopy and it shows nothing but irritation from acid reflux. Don't be too quick to blame things on fibro....and don't let your docs do that either. Good luck with the colonoscopy and be sure you let them know exactly what happened with your previous endoscopy. Sorry I sound like your mother....goes along with my old age.....giggle! Keep us posted on how things turn out.
