Hello everyone! Im new here. I went to a Rheumatologist yesterday. He spent an hour with me. Looking at all my joints, feeling around my back, watched me walk & bend. Asked me all kinds of questions. Looked at lab reports from my referring physician. All was remarkable & i had no abnormalities in my joints. He said he was sure I was dealing with fibro. He talked with me about it. Wrote script for Gabapentin. Gave me a brochure about it. I was reading over it on the way home. And, i was overwhelmed. I hurt in every single place the diagram showed. And, as I read, i was thinking WOW, this sounds exactly like me!! I was wondering if anyone is on Gabapentin & if so. How long did it take to work. To help with the pain? Im having a hard time accepting, that I have to slow down. And, i cant exercise as hard as I used to. Ive felt so bad for 2yrs. Even tho, it cant be cured Im thankful for a diagnosis & very thankful it isnt something much worse!! Thank you for any advice you can give me! Amber

I was diagnosed about 4-5 months ago. I can so relate with the feeling 'overwhelmed' in the begining, finally knowing whats wrong, and not having them say here take this you'll be fine. I use to run 20 miles a day, now walk lol giggles... good luck! but i do yoga! I'm 36 , I've been on Gabapentin, 300 mg a day FOR ME it didn't work. I tried Lyrica it helped my pain , but the side effect were far worst then I could deal!!! So Im back on Gavie as I call it.. Just a stronger dose with tramadol..! I give new med 3 weeks If they ain't helping I'm calling doctor.. and if your side effect are to much call asap! I just got sleepy my first two days didn't really have any other side effect. and I'm a sissy The fibro family here is awesome I'm sure you will here from more wiser than I! I am very gretful to them they have really helped me learn a lot through this!!! I call them my wise fibro family!
I hope this was some what helpful, and I hope you have more pain free days then not, have a wonderful day!
I hear ya!! 100%. I love my tramadol as well!! With out it gosh my stairs would out of the question!! My partner and I laugh at me some day because if we don't we will cry!! It keeps the light side it it all aswell. Id give old gavie a try before you try the others. That my opinion . Read up on some of the post about fibro and meds. Thats what I do. And I chose going back to gabie. ! Im always here if you need a friend honey!! Any time!!
Hi , I haven't tried Gaba, but wanted to welcome you here. But sorry you're here at the same time.
Take time and read some of whats here and you might find something that may help you and if nothing else find out you're not alone in your suffering.
please use caution with this drug. i was on it for 10 years and in the last 3 had 8 strokes. since quitting the med 5 years ago not one brain fart. all it helped me with was the restless leg syndrome. that was the purpose of being on it. not for fibro.
when faced with something you cannot control peace lies in self education and adaptation to the situation.

I tried gabapetin and it didnt work for me. The Lyrica however has. They placed me on tramadol just this week for the pain. Ive had this for YEARS now.. was on hydrocodone, but Im allergic to that, and now with stomach ulcers they had to take me off anything to upset the stomach. Really bad yeast infections of the mouth has taken me down down down this past few weeks. On ten days of diclifonic for that, i need an antibiotic for the virus she says i have but she cant put me on one because of the swollen tounge and pain in my mouth. I tried the Gaba too, and couldnt handle that. Hope you feel a bit better soon.
Thank you so much for the great welcome!!! I so appreciate it I have felt so alone for so long! Im glad I found you all. I have been telling my family & friends about my diagnosis. Because they knew the struggles that I was going thru. And, when I tell them I have fibromyalgia. They cringe. Im thinking oooh they finally at least get it. I know, they dont know what I feel, but? The med has been helping. I tried taking 2 last night & I wont be doing that again! My head & neck hurt so bad!!
Gabapentin is a mild pain medication. Lyrica is more potent than Gabapentin and you will sleep better with Lyrica.
I believe the reason your doctor prescribe you Gabapentin is cause it's much cheaper than Lyrica...but less effective also...
The problem with chronic pain and with fibromyalgia is that you don't get deep sleep and it's like a vicious circle...Before they invented Lyrica doctors recommended patients who had fibromyalgia to take sleeping pills so they will sleep better and will have less pain.
That is why today some doctors prescribe Xyrem for fibromyaliga.
You are exactly right! He said it was cheaper. We have insurance. But, have to pay up front. Send in info & get reimbursed half. Does the Lyrica cause weight gain or hunger? My friend said she gained 40lbs on Lyrica. Not sure if it was from med. But that scared me
First of all, does Gabapentin help you? Perhaps you should wait for a while and see.
Most people say Lyrica helps better even with deep sleep.
Now, how much money do you think you will have to pay for Lyrica?
Lyrica can increase appetite BUT if you eat salads....you won't put on weight.
So what you do is eat what you usually eat and when you feel like you have to eat more than usual eat salads. I dont' think Lyrica makes you put on weight if you won't eat...it just increase appetite for some people...so you eat salads...or other things with low calories and you be fine.
Another problem with Lyrica is that you have to increase the dose and there is a ceiling to it. I am not so sure what is the ceiling to it nowdays and perhaps it will stop working one day.
You can also try clonazepam, it's not too different than lyrica...it has anti-convulsant and can help you sleep. (also helps with pain).
So you have some options out there. When nothing works they can prescribe xyrem for sleep but that's another story.
Don't worry about putting on weight. Let us know how you are doing.
What happened to you, have you been in a car accident?
I would love to say the Gaba was helping. But, my back & neck pain are back. I can call the pharmacy and see what the cost is. And, I worry about the weight gain. Because my eating is out of control I have been so depressed I cant stand it. Always being in pain & nothing is working. I am an emotional eater. Running a fever for the last 3 days. I also tested positive for Rocky Mountain Spotted tick fever & mono. Not really knowing much about either. And how long either one lays dormant or how often flare ups come. I took 2 rounds of antibiotic Doxicyclin & not sure it did anything for me. I also have Scoliosis I try to tell myself to suck it up & be tough. That isnt working for me. I wasnt in a car wreck. I have been going to Dr,s now for 2-3 yrs trying to find someone that will take the right test to figure out what was going on with me. That never happend. They just tell me Im healthy. Or give me pain meds not knowing what they are even treating. Or tell me I need to see a therapist. Which Im already doing. The Dr I have now actually cares & tries & listens. I never knew they existed!

I too have fibromyalgia but my specialist didn't given me anything to alleviate pain - she just said, 'live with it'. I think I need a new doctor and perhaps some information on Gabapentin. I have read heaps of literature on fibromyalgia and have been diagnosed for 9 years. I really hope that you find some relief from the pain and the stress it causes. I'll be thinking of you.

'Live with it' is NOT an appropriate answer for the doctor to give you! Have you tried anti-inflammatories? I'm on meloxicam twice daily, with tramadol and flexeril as needed. Some people with fibromyalgia have to use narcotics.
