I noticed a dime size area on bottom of ball of my foot in crease of great toe and next toe at back of ball near begining of arch. Started about 5 to 6 weeks ago. It started out as tender when step on solid flooring(tile) without shoe on in bathroom. No discolored area, not raised just a dime size spot that hurt especially getting up from bath bench and getting out of shower. It went away after a few days.
Last week was getting up from bench and started pain back. When checked it noticed area same size about dime size but felt like lump under skin and looked like a bruise with flashligh shined on it. With shoes on not so bad just feels like got something under my ball of foot in shoe. But barefoot in shower it is more painful.
Went to 1 of my regular doctors today. She said she felt the first metarsatal head and thinks it is out of place and rubbing causing formation of a callous. She is refering me to a podiatrist.
Anyone know how this is treated?
i'm going into the doctor for the same thing this week. everyone says it's something else... people who would know (nurse friends, a couple of people who worked in a foot doctor's office) tell me to get new insoles... didn't seem to help though.
Sorry you are having same problem.
I wear extra depth diabetic shoes, mostly for added space cause my feet swell quite a bit even with wearing graduated compression from veinous stasis. And current shoe and insert is just about 6 months old. But since lump had to stop wearing them, guess the small heel of shoe caused more weight on ball of foot causes more pain. I mostly on foot when transfering in and out of my wheelchair and it's my dominant foot for weight bearing so has thrown my world for a loop. Seems some of the swelling in lump has decreased and patch of dry hard skin is forming in middle. But there is still a lump under skin and still painful especially on tile floor.
I have an appointment tommorow with podiatist(sp?). Hope he can fix it.
Let us know how the appointment goes and what the doctor tells you. I have my first appointment with a pod tomorrow - I have been waiting years to go, but never had the insurance. I suffer from the same hard, callused lump on the ball of my feet for about 4 years now – been shaving it off to make it more comfortable. I know I have bunions, and over the years it most likely has worsened, which can lead to this “ball of the foot” pain. I am excited about going to have my feet problems finally taken care of – but SCARED TO DEATH reading about the painful recovery involved!
Pod looked at lump a few seconds and said he thought something was in my foot. He opened area of lump and said it was a pus pocket. He dug around some and said could not find source. Then they x-rayed my foot and didn't find any metal object. Suppose to have a MRI tommrow and have vascalur checked in foot next Tues to see if good enough circulation to do surgery to find and remove abcess. He put me on Keflex 500 qid and instructions on wet to dry dressings and soak foot bid with vingaer and water.
Hope ya'll have better luck.
I don't know if I have the same thing or not, but went to the specialist last week. He said that I injured my tendon in the bottom of my foot. I may not have realized it because I am a diabetic and my feet are mostly numb. He said that the sheath around the tendon can tear and it has nerves and blood vessels in it. He said that with rest it can heal and wanted to do a steroid injection. He backed off after finding out about my serious latex allergy, even to the rubber in the medicine bottles that the shot is drawn from. His next suggestion was to get a post op shoe for that foot and wear it for a few weeks to aid in the healing. He said that mine was not serious enough yet to require surgery to fix it. Mine sort of feels like I have balled up sock in the arch of my foot. It is aggravating but not extremely painful, but maybe that is the numbness speaking too.
Well had MRI and it wasn't a good viewing. Due to health problems my toes and leg spasms at times. But Pod said located what MRI and him think is fiberous mass. Acouple things he said could be and least of which in a foreign object that has been encapsulated.
Cultures from first visit were all negative.
After this a physiological study was done on foot and ABI for it. The index was pretty good so have fairly good blood flow. They were testing cause I'm diabetic most of life.
A second Pod looked at it and reopened area this past Thurs in clinic. Most all of ucler from pus pocket has filled in almost to surface. Only had small opening that they think was a sinus tract. He debreidment of this and took some tissue out of it and probed again without locating anything.
It seems not to have any drainage and looks pretty nice. Still tell where last one took more tissue out.
I go back this coming Thurs. They will decide if need to do surgery to investigate or do a wait/see thing.
Hope you have better luck.
