I had a bunion removal operation 3 years ago, and am having the 2 titanium screws removed from the side of the foot in a few weeks' time, with local anaesthetic. If you've had your screws removed, please let me know how soon afterwards you could walk and run? I want to go on holiday 2 weeks after the op and am worried that I won't be fully mobile. Many thanks!
It was not difficult at all! I really didn't even need pain medications and was back to normal within just a couple days with he exception of the shower thing. You'll need to keep the incision dry for 2 weeks. This is NOTHING in comparison with having the bunionectomy.. you'll be fine!
A few years ago, I had two screws removed from my foot after a fusion. I think I was on crutches for just a couple of days and then walking soon after. I dont think you can do high impact exercise for a few weeks as the bones need to fill in. The relief I got from removing the screws was amazing!
Yay! I'm so glad to read these replies - THank you!! (even though I wasn't the original post-er)
I'm thinking I'm probably going to need to have 2 of my screws out (the ones at mid-foot fusion/Lapidus) as that area is what is still giving me quite a bit more pain that I would expect at this point. (surgery was 11/12/05) So I'm glad to hear that it's comparatively very minor and helped you so much!
I had three screws and a plate removed after a fusion of the big toe. It was a breeze compared to the fusion. I was on crutches for a couple of days, then wore my CAM walker for about a week. My OS did have me wear my surgical shoe for another couple of weeks because I was in the process of moving and she wanted me to have some extra support.
I didn't have general. I had heavy sedation and an ankle block. The ankle block lasted about 24 hours. I only used pain meds for about 3 -4 days.
I have had a rough time--June 05, terrible injury: fractured 2nd, 3rd, 4th metatarsals; 3 titanium screws & 2 pins; immobilized 5 weeks--couldn't even care for myself; end of August 05 pins came out and I washed the foot for the first time; off crutches in Sept 05; walking without great pain & pronounced limp by Nov-Dec 05; now back to hiking & biking with some pain, but can't run (Mar 06). Screws still in there. Foot still thicker than it should be where screws are. Doctors are good at what they do but have never been honest about recovery. Will screws have to come out? If so, what kind of recovery is that? If anyone has had anything like this, please let me know what happened...
