Cool Stitches Are Out

Had my stitches out this afternoon and it wasn't too bad. I found a couple of posts here that made me a little apprehensive. Anyway, in a week and a half more I'll be able to just put weight on the foot, but no walking yet. He's more concerned about the tenderness from the Mortons Neuroma than the bunion he removed. Still have allot of bruising that he's watching.

Re: Stitches Are Out

When I got my stitches out for a Distal Akin (toe straightened, bone shaved and screw put in) I was given an aftercare sheet from the Orthopedic Clinic at the hospital and told to gently rub my scar to encourage new nerve endings too reform. NO WAY!!!!!! Would I do this again. The stitches when removed ending up reopening the wound. Took 3-4 months for the skin to heal.

This year (9 July 07) I had the same surgery and was also told to rub the scar gently, the day after stitches were removed. NO WAY. I didnt and the scar healed completely after 4 weeks.

Just incase they told you to touch the scar (hopefully they didnt) I wouldnt.

Re: Stitches Are Out

I had stitches removed 11 days after ankle surgery and was told after the steri-strips (tapes) came off I could start massaging the scar. I waited until most of the scab came off and then very lightly started to run my fingers along it with lotion or Neosporin. It was weird at first, but started to feel good. I never rubbed hard, just vary gently. The sensitivity has improved a lot, whether that is just time or the gentle rub, I don't know. I am 4 weeks PO. Everyone is different. Having my foot in a boot, it really feels good to take it out and rub my leg and foot.

Smile Re: Stitches Are Out

Yes, my big toe is very sensitive on the under side. Dr. just lightly brushed it and I nearly came off the chair. Come to find out the skin is cracking and dry so he gave me some cream to rub on it. As for "massaging" anything the answer was ,no. He did rebandage my foot after stitches came out.

Re: Stitches Are Out

Am 30 and now 7 weeks PO since the 2nd operation and the scar has healed fine. I stopped wearing the boot a week ago. I go back for a final checkup in 6 weeks.

Do you also have problem with your balance? I keep falling over when I stand up after sitting down for a while or lying down. Am really wobbly. Have terrible pains/cramps in my knees too. Hospital said lack of balance is normal. But nobody else in the clinic seemed to fall over when they stood up.

Re: Stitches Are Out

Hi Precious55

Its so annoying not being able to walk about but sounds like your doing ok. Soon be at those ballet classes wont you? (heee heee heeeee). I wasnt able to walk on the first one but on the second one I had to walk straight away. Think its actually better to rest it like they said; less problems and gives it time to heal.

Seems you also have a good Consultant who knows what there doing which is great. Does you feel puffed just walking with crutches? Because it really takes it out of you doesnt it?

Hope your feeling better soon!

Cocoa x
