Arrow Tonail infection?

Just a few minutes ago I noticed that the middle toe on my right foot is red around the nail and when I curl my toe under to crack it the nail kind of hurts. I showed it to my mother and she says that it looks like I have a small toenail infection. Does it sound like a toenail infection to anyone else, and if it is how do I get rid of it? Do I have to go to the doctor, or is there something I can do at home? Thanks in advance to all who respond.
