Well, that's a pretty general question. Without knowing exactly which bones to be fused you are asking about, it's a little difficult to give a specific answer. In general it is where two bones that should form a joint are made to become solid through various surgical procedures. For example, the big toe joint is so damaged that it cannot be surgically made to operate correctly and is painful. The toe bones are fused and held with a metal plate to make the toe sit permanently at an angle.
