Could I have broken my toe that easily?

I was turning over in bed (with the help of my foot) and heard a snap and my big toe was suddenly burning with pain. This was five hours ago and it's still throbbing. No swelling or redness. I can move it, but its painful. What could I have done to it? My husband says I probably just 'popped' it, but I don't know what that means. Could it be broken? Would I hear a snap if I tore a ligament?

You may have dislocated it or popped the knuckle. Have you tried just gently pulling it into place?

Re: Could I have broken my toe that easily?

The damage, whatever it is, is to the middle joint - between the base of the toe and the nail. It's becoming more painful as the day goes on, too. I can't walk right, putting weight on the toe, and it's beginning to feel like the pain is spreading throughout my foot. It doesn't look out of joint, though.

Well, even if it's broken, all they are going to do is pull it into place and tape it to the one next to it. You can do that yourself....and I would recommend that you do. Wear some shoes with very sturdy soles...one that don't bend much. Take 2 Aleve every 8 hours. You may want to ice and elevate for a day or so.

Re: Could I have broken my toe that easily?

Well the pain got so bad I had to call the doctor. They referred me to a podiatrist and x-rays showed not broken bone. But he told me with the snap I heard it's most likely a torn ligament. So he gave me a special shoe to wear and a couple scripts.
