Post tendonitis or stress fracture?

I started running around 5 weeks ago and have developed severe pain on the inside of my right ankle. Generally my foot feels stiff and flexing is painful. Over the last couple of days the pain is radiating up the inside of my calf muscle. Swelling is minimal but there is some redness around the inside of my ankle. I am currently seeing a physiotheraphist for tendonitis in my wrist and asked him to take a look. He suggested that it is probably either tendonitis or a stress fracture and I have had my first session of ultrasound. However the pain is increasing daily and I am wondering just how long I should leave it before I visit my GP. I've heard that it is difficult to diagnose a stress fracture from an x-ray anyway. Should I just continue with the ultrasound and rest my ankle a bit, or pursue it further? Also, given my symptoms, would anyone agree with the diagnosis so far?
Thanks.

Unhappy

I hear ya! I have been dealing with, it sounds like the same thing for 2 years!! I've got extreme pain and tendernous on the bone, on top of my ankle. It started on the inside, now has worked it's way around the whole bone on the top of my heel. It also has started running up the back of my legs and feels like big knots all the way up. I can't do anything & no one seems to be able to either for me.
So far I have done;
-many inflamatories
-4 cortisone shots
-2 pairs ortodics
-physio, ultrasound,massage,I.F.C,stretching,lase r
-casts for 3 weeks
-chiropractor
-accupunture person wouldn't even try to fix
-was off work 4 months
-now on pain meds fulltime
-had bone scans,x-rays & M.R.I's, showed nothing...
-seen about 6 specialists, including Orthepedic Surgeons.
Not one said anything about Bursitis, just achiles tendonitis. I stumpled on info about Bursitis I know that's got to be it..
I am frustrated and don't know what to do next, I am only 30 and feel like people think you're faking!!!!

Thumbs up

Hi
Don't dispair, it does get better. It's nearly a year since I posted that original message. I eventually went to A&E when the pain got too bad and a very good doctor recommended I go for a bone scan. The results returned a positive diagnosis for a stress fracture and due to the extent I was placed in a cast for 6 weeks. The recovery process has been long however I got back to running a couple of months a go and completed a 10k race just last week. The key is to take it easy and not rush things because unlike a normal break, those caused by sport are easily aggrivated and take longer to heal because they weren't caused by an initial 'injury'. I hope it gets better for you. It sounds like it needs investigating further and you know your own body best so don't let'em fobb you off! Go with your instincts!
