In sprained my foot and ankle back in Aug and still have pain

Last August I took a bad fall in the parking lot at work.My shoe hit a patch of concrete,my foot twisted sideways and threw me off balance.I fell hard to the ground.Xrays were taken and the doctor said nothing was broken.I had weeks of PT and had to wear a velco shoe for quite a while because the swelling was so bad.I also had to wear a air cast for a period of time. The top and outer side of my foot still hurts and so does the inner portion of my ankle. It is still very hard to walk on it and afterwards I notice swelling coming back again.I also feel pain on the underside of my foot especially in the mid section and pad underneath. Can anyone give me any insight of why my foot doesn't seem to be healing the way I thought it should?

If you're still having pain IN your ankle this long after, I would go to the doctor again. I have what is called an Osteochondral Lesion of the Talus (a tear in the cartilage in my ankle) after spraining my ankle from a fall. Same deal...thought it was broken, got x-rays and saw that it wasn't. Over time the swelling went down and I could walk again, but the inner ankle pain remained particularly if I ran/exercised. It is possible that you have an OCD as well...if you got to an orthopaedic surgeon they'll probably have you get an MRI to see if that's the problem.

I am going to make an appointment with the foot specialist.Hopefully he can run some test or something to give me more answers on why I'm still having pain.

Re: In sprained my foot and ankle back in Aug and still have pain

I am a tennis player and had minor foot ankle problems all fall that I attributed to playing tennis. In December while I was putting on a high heel dress boot, I felt my ankle crack as I put the boot on (and pain), but the second my foot was in the boot, it no longer hurt. Over the next few weeks I noticed it hurting when ever I tried to put my foot in a shoe (the action of flexing my ankle to put on a shoe) and eventually my foot began to hurt more. In early January I went to my orthopedist. An x-ray did not show anything, but a MRI showed a fairly larger osteochondral lesion of the talar dome. I did 8 weeks in a walking boot and then 4 weeks of PT. My ankle would have some good days and not good days. 1st part of April I did something to that ankle and my ankle swelled up quite a bit . Went to see the ankle guru in the same orthpedist group. He wanted to try a steroid shot before surgery to see if I had any improvement after 2 weeks. Overall, my ankle is moving better, but it still hurts when I have been on it too long or done too much or when I have been sitting too long. Still get swelling on the other side of hte ankle. Just want to know what is going to get the best result so that I can get back to all my activities! Steroid shots won't heal the ankle or stop the pain.

Hi CTA,

Sorry to hear about your injury. Did you have surgery for the OCD or just conservative treatment? Typically, surgery is need for these lesions. I really don't think cortisone is a good idea. It can potentially damage the joint, cartilage and ligaments hence the limit applied to their application each year.

I would ask your OS to do an ankle arthroscopy and assess the damage repairing it there and then. It's the only way to know for sure as MRI's aren't great at picking everything up - trust me!

Good luck.

Greg
