I continue to wear a bunion splint most nights and usually wear a toe spacer when i wear sneakers. I don't think you need to wear one after a certain point but I do because I'm paranoid about my bunion coming back
can either of you tell me what your docs feeling is about the toe spacer or splint. it seems like my big toe is right back where it started before the surgery. but then it was a very mild bunion. but i am scared the #2 toe will start crossing over again. i saw some splints online, many looked useless, but some designs looked like they could be helpful. i bet it feels weird though. i see doc in two days and will ask. Dee
my pod said that you have to 'train' the tendons to keep the toe in proper alignment because they've been stretched out from having a bunion for so long. My big toe still curves inward a little bit. I wish it were straight but I wear the splints as often as I can to prevent it from going back to the way it was before my surgery. The splints seem to help a little bit.
I got mine yesterday and I went from no pain to excrutiating pain- is it connected?? I figured my tendons and bones were angry with me for trying to force them go in a different direction. Like when you go to chiropractor and your back is out of whack, they realign you and you hurt worse leaving than when you came in.
I called doctor but they never got back to me. Its so frustrating.
i wore the spacer from 6 weeks post op until 12 weeks post op. No need to continue after 12 weeks.
I was cocerned my toe was still angled and asked my surgeon, and he told me he positioned it like that on purpose so I could wear shoes easily. He said he used to make them really straight and then people would come back complaining of difficulty wearing (womens dress) shoes so he would have to do more surgery to make them less straight.
The doc gave it to me. I may have been panicking about my pain. It was so weird because I went from no pain with the postop dressing, to excrutiating pain in my toe (which hadnt previouslt felt pain), after the dresssing was removed and I put in the spacer. I just assumed the two were linked. The pain last two days and I havent hurt since then. I am still wearing the spacer.
