Spasms & pain after big toe fusion

Hello,
I am 6 days post-op after a big toe fusion. My post-op pain was controlled for a few days with Demerol, then that started to not work as well. I started having foot spasms at night which made the pain worse and was prescribed valium and Lortab. The valium works for the spasms, but the Lortab barely controls the pain. If I have to get up to go to the bathroom, my foot throbs and hurts like crazy. Has anyone ever experienced these symptoms before?

Re: Spasms & pain after big toe fusion

I was given percocet for pain and a muscle relaxer for the spasms and both worked great. I highly recommend asking for that. The doc should know what kind of muscle relaxer to give you. I had fusion as well and the pain was very tolerable with these meds.
Hope this helps.

Re: Spasms & pain after big toe fusion

I called my doctor and he gave me valium for a muscle relaxer which really has helped. How long did your spasms last? Was it the whole time you were healing or just a few days?

Re: Spasms & pain after big toe fusion

I think i only had to take the muscle relaxers regularly for about the first couple weeks then only periodically a couple weeks after that. I'm glad you found something that helps. Today i am 8 weeks nwb with only 4 more to go :0))) YEAH! Happy healing, aside from the $%#@& crutches, it DOES get easier.

Re: Spasms & pain after big toe fusion

i never had spasams after big toe fusion surgery. i only took pain pills for about 3-4 days. everyone is different. be careful to not rely on these medications.
