Jones Fracture Blues

Around the first of the year, I was diagnosed with a likely Jones Fracture of the 5th metatarsal. I do not have insurance right now, so I came out of pocket for the x rays and have been pretty much treating myself since then. I went 6 weeks total nwb and then another 6 weeks in the boot. Now I am walking without the boot. It is painful and awkward, but I can get around. Stairs go slowly, but I can get up them. I am going to pick up a cane later today to help myself get around. I still get a little swelling and soreness in the foot that is pretty much abated w/ ice at the end of the day. Is this normal? I assume that if I had a total non-union, I wouldn't be able to even walk, right? The spot where the break occured isn't sore any more, so I am encouraged by that. I have pretty much full range-of-motion in my foot. I can push/pull on my little toe w/out pain and pushing the bone gently doesn't hurt either. Besides just walking, does anyone know any good exercises to get my ankle/foot stronger safely?
