Mid zone foot surgery

I passed out and fell following my 1st and only cardiac episode resulting in a malformed heart valve replaced and foot surgery (a plate, 3 screws, 3 pins) the last week of February. On 4/29 the cast and 1 screw that's holding the ligament in place across my instep will be removed. I wonder how much loss of range of motion in my ankle/foot I should expect after 9 weeks in a cast and comes next?

Re: Mid zone foot surgery

After being in a cast for 9 weeks, I'm sure there has been a fair amount of muscle atrophy. Keep in mind that its going to take a while to get all your strength and range of motion back, you'll probably get stiff and sore pretty quickly at first. Hopefully your doc has referred you to some physical therapy to start rebuilding your strength and range of motion in your joints, tendons and ligaments. Good luck! I hope all goes well for you!

Re: Mid zone foot surgery

you will have a very tiny calf muscle and will be very stiff. but once you begin walking again, it comes back quickly. also, depending what they pinned/plated you may never get full motion back. but it should be functional so i wouldn't worry too much.

definitely get into physical therapy, it will help with strengthening and motion which helps with walking.
