Would you do it again???

Hi all,
I am scheduled for pttd surgery in two weeks. Still unsure. Chronic pain off and on for 3+ years. I am 45yo. Does anybody wish they would have waited longer to do surgery? Doc says waiting longer may cause need for fusion down the road. Is this YEARS down the road ? Pain is tolerable with orthotics and limited outings. Does anyone have more/worse issues since surgery? I am scheduled for calcaneal osteotomy, tendon transfer, and achillies tendon lengthening? Has anyone just had the ptt tendon "wrapped"? Did this work long term? Please help!! I am really struggling with this decision

Re: Would you do it again???

I waited too long and ended up witha fusion (wasn't offered pttd surgery earlier by my HMO...had I known it was a solution I would have done it in a heart beat. New HMO diagnosed and did a triple arthrodesis (fusion)

I would have it done...improve your quality of life and hopefully avoid a fusion

I would have never done it. Have had more pain since the surgery 2 years ago than before. Am going to pain management now but nothing seems to help. Have tried orthodics, PT, and every king of pain med out there but still in pain 24/7. Hope you have better luck.

Re: Would you do it again???

The verdict is still out on me. I had the first foot done in September 08 and the second one on April 14 of this year. I am still struggling BUT please don't let any posts like mine sway you. EVERYONE is so different and there have been many succesful stories here on this board. I have a way to go with my recovery but I HAD to try this because of the pain ans struggles I have had for years with these feet! My advice is to have the surgery and you can post back here with your success story for us! Good luck!

Re: Would you do it again???

I had everything you are thinking of having done and a few other things and I was just thinking this morning of doing my other foot. My surgery was on 3/3/09. So, I'm still in a hard cast, but so far the pain is waaaaaaay less than it was. For me, it's a quality of life thing. I'm 44 and have too much to do in life to let my feet limit me.

I did decide that if I do it again, I'd do it in January. That way, I don't have to drive much, and I'll be ready for summer. We live at the beach and it's going to kill me not being able to go this summer. No sand for a long time.

Re: Would you do it again???

I would do it in a heartbeat. Although not all outcomes are positive, most are. You will positively have pain if you don't have the surgery, and the pain will only get worse. With it the odds are that you will do fine. The recovery is hard, but at least there is an end in sight. If you do nothing there is no end in sight. Best of luck to you. Let us know how you are doing.

Re: Would you do it again???

I too would do it again in a heartbeat and plan on doing my other foot in Oct. of this year. I had my left foot done last Nov. it still is a little stiff but I can work on it 5-6 hours a day standing. My right foot (non-surgery foot) is the foot that I have problems with and end up wearing a boot to get through the day. That shows me that surgery is worth it.
My advice would be to make sure you get a very qualified surgery, someone that specialists in only foot and ankle sugery. My surgeon does this type of surgery weekly and I felt very confident, I had talked to two others before that had only done the surgery randomly.

Re: Would you do it again???

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the comments. I really appreciate all the input. I will let you know what I decide to do. My pre op is this week. I am happy to know most of you are glad you did the surgery.

Re: Would you do it again???

123Buddy - it's Dr. Garrett Tallman in Encinitas, CA. He's a very good surgeon, but his bed side manner is curt. If you like a chatty doctor, he's not for you. But otherwise, I love him.

Good luck!
